National NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to learn, celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the NAIDOC Week theme ‘For Our Elders’ pays tribute to the important role Elders play in Indigenous communities and families.

To understand more about the significance of NAIDOC Week, we sat down with proud Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta Black Fulla, ENOKi (they/them) - the artist behind this year’s NAIDOC Week creative at Westfield.

As the Traditional Owners of Narrm (Melbourne), the @Wurundjeri people will acknowledge their Elders across @naidocweek by bringing together a public portrait installation on the banks of the Birrarung (Yarra River) @fed.square.

As supporters of the Wurundjeri community, we invite you to follow @Wurundjeri on Instagram and join us as we honour the legacy and stories of their Ancestors past.

In coming together in this way, we walk alongside Wurundjeri people on their traditional lands as they elevate the voices of their Elders and continue to preserve Wurundjeri Culture for future generations 🖤💛❤️

It’s now NAIDOC Week 2023, and to celebrate this year’s theme ‘For Our Elders’ we want to pay special tribute to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson Jr.

Uncle Bill and the team at @Wurundjeri have provided essential guidance with the development of the Yaluk Langa garden project at Heide, an important and evolving chapter in the Heide story which provides opportunities for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people to achieve their responsibilities in caring for Country and to highlight their living culture. In October last year, Uncle Bill, along with other Wurundjeri Elders and artists, shared their knowledge and culture as they removed bark from the first of three trees selected for scarring on the Yaluk Langa site. Watch as he talks more about it here.

Heide are proud to live and work on @Wurundjeri Country. We look forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week together.

We were honoured to host Wurundjeri Elder, Uncle Bill Nicholson Jnr, who performed a Welcome to Country ceremony at Lauriston.

The whole school community gathered inside the new Ullmer Sports & Wellbeing Centre to witness this important event.

Uncle Bill's words and presence brought us all together and reminded us of the importance of respecting and honouring the land on which we stand. Thank you, Uncle Bill, for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with us.
