NORTHSIDE X OYSTERS
DYK that our Northside neighborhoods are using oysters 🦪 to recover from decades of toxins that polluted our river? Yes! Oysters have a superpower - they filter water and improve the quality and health of our rivers!

The drone video you see is from Riverview Park on Jacksonville’s Northside during a POSH installation project along the Trout River.

Learn more about the power of oysters at our #FloridaClimateWeek Film Screening: Unfiltered - the truth about oysters film screening!
📆 Tuesday October 6
⏰ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
📍 Highlands Regional Library 1826 Dunn Avenue

@eastcoast_oysters will have oyster ready to eat during the film screening! The filmmaker, Josh McLawhorn, will be present to talk about the inspiration behind the documentary. He’ll be joined by local community members like @ray.on.purpose @riverviewcollectivecommunity @sjriverkeeper @jaxoysterconservation @gene4thepeeps @matanzasoysters

Community stewards, researchers, marine biologists and engineers are working in Riverview to build POSH modules - pervious oyster shell habitats- along the Trout River so that neighbors living on the Northside can have fish, kayak, and enjoy a cleaner river.

One of the coolest things I have done in my career was photograph the late Chad Gilbert and @newfoundglory when they came to Jacksonville in 2021 for the Jax River Jams.

I have enjoyed them since I was introduced to Sticks and Stones in 2002.

Catalyst is still one of my favorite albums.

There have been dozens of times I have listened to "No News is Good News" ...in the car en route to working in a newsroom.

My son and I listen to "From the Screen to Your Stereo 3" dozens of times on the way to school. He loves that album.

Gilbert died on Sunday. He was only 45.

My condolences to the Gilbert family and New Found Glory.

Jaguars President Mark Lamping narrated a tour of the renovated Everbank Stadium ahead of the team’s 2026 preseason opener tonight against the Carolina Panthers.

Here’s some of what’s new:

*Capacity in the stadium was reduced to 43,500 for this season. Lamping says the $1.4 billion renovation should be complete in early August 2028.

*So far, there have been 1.5 million person hours invested in the renovation.

*There will be three layers of 360 degree walkways in the new facility: field, main and canopy levels.

The Black press has been a long-standing tradition of ensuring that our stories are told with the delicacy and authenticity that we deserve. In this current era of resistance we are in, this administration from a Federal and Statewide perspective is disrespecting, condemning, and outright ostracizing our stories and our presence in media spaces. How do we as organizers, organizations, and campaigns utilize the Black press to take our power back in this country? We bring in @_dawnmontgomery from Black Press USA and Report For America alumnus @wwbrown19 to discuss the Power of The Black Press on THIS EPISODE OF BLKFLA! Episode link in bio!

✨ Major Win for #BlackHistory in Duval, and I got to be part of it! 🖤

Today marked the official launch of the LaVilla Heritage Trail!

Carla Mechele Media provided Storytelling with Strategy for the historical markers and brochure, in partnership with @ErinIsCreative.co on Graphic Design. I wrote the trail’s vision and strategy and identified its themes.

We are thankful to DIA and @planningcollab for bringing us onto the team 🙏🏾

✨ The best part is being able to cement my Mom’s historic contribution into this structure. As a Graphic Designer in 1989, she created the typesetting for the first Jacksonville Black History Calendar, an annual publication that went on for decades and won a Historic Preservation Award in 2016. ✨

📍Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park (@levsparkjax)is the trailhead for the trail. Visit LaVillaHeritageTrail.com for more information.

This year, we want to fund more students. With your support we can accomplish our goal and support our amazing superstars from Raines.

Join us on May 30th at the Garden Club of Jacksonville for the 2026 scholarship and awards gala where we will award scholarships to law students and more students from Raines. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Negro History Week, Jacksonville Today compiled a list of 100 Black people with connections to Jacksonville who made a big impact here and beyond.

Former Jacksonville Sheriff and Edward Waters University President Nat Glover spoke during a recent event at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church that celebrated Jacksonville's inclusion on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.

In 1995 Glover became the first Black Sheriff elected in Florida since Reconstruction.
