REMEMBERING SYLVIA BORGONOVO

I was gutted as all of Sylvia’s friends have been learning that Sylvia has transitioned into the Big Sky.

My condolences to Dave, Amanda, Heide Borgonovo & all who knew Sylvia.

Montana was fortunate to have Sylvia’s constant advocacy for Wolves, Bears & all her wild neighbors. She had a way of sharing the urgency to get involved & speak up to the MT Commission & elected officials in the kindest ways. Her photographs were the way into compassion and caring about the futures of the next generations of wild ones.

We chatted often & my heart was so big for her & her photos. Her eye got better & better. I’ve selected some of my fav images to this post.
Of course, the day she posted her image of 1090F from the Mollie’s pack she earned the golden ticket….I guess she used it to get into heaven.

“yellowstone_406 Oh my goodness, what an incredible moment! I experienced something truly extraordinary - a close encounter with wolf 1090F from the legendary Mollie’s pack. This wolf is a living legend, being 10 years and 9 months old and the oldest wolf in Yellowstone, where most wolves only survive 4-5 years.
The Mollie’s pack is famously elusive, typically residing in the southeastern part of the park and rarely seen by visitors. Imagine my pure excitement when this majestic gray wolf appeared, representing a pack with an incredible history dating back to the original 1995 wolf reintroduction.
This wolf isn’t just an animal - she’s a symbol of Yellowstone’s remarkable conservation success. The Mollie’s pack, known for its strong “girl-power” leadership, has survived in one of the park’s toughest territories, specializing in hunting challenging prey like bison. What an absolute privilege to witness such a rare and resilient creature in the wild!

“THERE IS STILL HOPE!
MONTANANS WHO VALUE WILDLIFE AND OUR SHARED NATURAL HERITAGE CAN
MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD.
LET’S STAND TOGETHER TO PROTECT THE WOLVES THAT SYMBOLIZE THE WILD SPIRIT OF OUR STATE. REACH OUT TO YOUR SENATORS AND ADVOCATE FOR SUSTAINABLE, SCIENCE-BASED WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT. TOGETHER, WE CAN FIGHT FOR A FUTURE WHERE WOLVES THRIVE IN MONTANA’S RUGGED LANDSCAPES.”

Here’s our 2026 Speaker Series, titled Beyond America 250. Every evening of the 2026 workshop will be in depth discussions from brilliant writers and thinkers in the Elk River community. We have a couple spots left in the workshop. Will one be yours? Don’t miss these speakers, a chance to see Yellowstone from a guide who’s spent his life discovering its wonders, and many more sources of inspiration. Come join us on the river.

Bozeman friends and community - thank you for the incredible turn out at last night’s sold out event at @theellentheatre! We had the privilege of hearing from @david.quammen @betsygainesquammen @cristina.eisenberg @mattk.barnes and @wwcoyote on their visions for a better future for people and wolves, and what is required of us now to move together towards true coexistence.

We discussed the need for new stories, contenting with outdated myths, establishing shared goals and values in wild and intact ecosystems, developing educational projects that foster critical thinking and better problem-solving, supporting science and its role in decision making, and the meaning and actions of reciprocity. We contemplated the question of what we owe to the future, and howled in the likeness of our furred neighbors towards the just-shy-of-full moon. 🌕 What a night! What a community!

If you missed the event, keep an eye on @inthecompanyofwolvesfilm for forthcoming screenings and events.

Until next time, Bozeman!

Expansion in Alaska’s NPR-A, the Largest Tract of Undeveloped Public Land in the United States.

The Department of the Interior released a draft Environmental Analysis (EA) for the Western Arctic, proposing oil and gas development on 82% of the National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A).

This plan would open an additional 7 million acres, expanding total access to 18.5 million acres of the 23-million-acre Reserve. It removes protections for designated ‘Special Areas, including Teshekpuk Lake (Alaska’s largest Arctic lake) and the Colville River (Alaska’s largest Arctic river). This threatens the trilateral agreement and Iñupiat sovereignty.

Photo/ Muskox are Ice Age survivors and one of the Alaskan Arctic’s most remarkable animals—perfectly adapted to the tundra, they even outlasted the woolly mammoths.
