BACKYARD BBQ (TODAY):
Tune in from 4-5pm to hear a live performance from fingerstyle guitarist Josh Kimbrough. We’ll chat with Josh afterwards about his upcoming show on 10/6 at The Fuzzy Needle with Libby Rodenbough (member of Sluice, Weirs, Fust, Mipso) and Paul Spring (of Holy Hive).

Josh released his debut, Slither, Soar & Disappear, in 2020 on Tompkins Square Records (LP issued by Worried Songs), earning praise from MOJO Magazine, Aquarium Drunkard, and UNCUT Magazine, among others. Since then, he’s collaborated with Australian composer Andrew Tuttle on the track Correlation and contributed to New Commute’s “New Commute Forever” compilation. And a new record is in the works. Josh’s playing brings to mind a host of artists: Jansch, Drake and Fahey, to the Penguin Café Orchestra and Mike Hurley.

Tune in on your radio 89.3 FM, or at wxyc.org, or with the wxyc app! 📻

@rollingstone described his high-energy, socially conscious sound as “Southern Gospel Punk.”

@pastemagazinemusic describes his “devotion to a vision [that] drives Bains and The Glory Fires’ music beyond the momentary exhilaration of any single live performance.”

Meltdown Rodeo is populated with characters who exemplify the grit and resilience that mainstream country music seeks to smooth over. From the tattoo artist in “Traveler’s Cross” to the titular “Maureen” and Dykes and Bikes co-founder “Soni Wolf.” - @rainbowrodeomag

18 college radio stations taking music right now ☀️

No fees, no gatekeepers, no agent required. Every station on this list is open to unsigned artists today — you just have to send it the way they actually ask for.

📻 WFMU (Jersey City) — the most influential freeform station in the country, and there is no digital submission route at all. Vinyl, CD, CD-R, cassette. 📻 WXYC (UNC Chapel Hill) — legendary freeform that deliberately plays what nothing else in the Triangle will. 📻 WUTK (Knoxville) — reviewed every Sunday and Monday. Send a track list and contact info with it. 📻 KVRX (UT Austin) — “none of the hits, all of the time.” One published rule: no AI-generated music. 📻 WMSE (Milwaukee) — the clearest guidance anywhere: four FCC-clean tracks minimum, two to three week turnaround. 📻 WUOG (Athens, GA) — they only play artists with no Billboard Hot 100 single in 20 years. Built for the unsigned.

Here’s the part most artists miss: nine of these eighteen want physical media. WMBR at MIT refuses MP3s outright. WSOU takes CDs only. WRHU rejects links and files. KTRU publishes no submission email at all.

That sounds like a hurdle. It’s actually the opening — a mailed CD lands in a pile of five, not five hundred.

If we missed one of your favorites feel free to share them below 🌅

Always check the station’s own page before you post anything.
