GroovRoots: Happening-Procession

Artist Serhiy Demchuk and the ZIP Group led a sonic procession through Berlin, beginning at IFA Gallery and culminating in the courtyard of ACUD KUNST HAUS. This participatory happening transformed found dry roots into living instruments.

Using a unique technique developed by Demchuk, the roots—gathered across Berlin—were used to extract natural sounds, revealing the hidden pulse within wood. As part of the project “Once We Were Trees – Now We Are Birds”, participants tuned into the rhythms resonating from the inner vibrations of the trees, balancing roots in their hands to create a collective echo — a breathing organism, an orchestra briefly woven into the urban soundscape.

The Cradle.
This installation revisits ASYL, a structure once built by ZIP Group above the entrance to XLprojects Berlin, where one of the artists slept during the exhibition setup. Now, recreated in the courtyard of ACUD exclusively for the festival “Once We Were Trees – Now We Are Birds”, Cradle becomes a temporary nest for festival guests.

In the finale of the GroovRoots happening, the audience completed the installation by adding branches and roots they had played during the procession — bringing the work to its final form.

Very intensive time. For two weeks we were building site-specific installations together with Başak Tuna @basak.tuna , Kolya Oleynikov @oleynikov9 and Evgenia Skvortsova @peanut.buttcher for anniversary exhibition of Free Home University @freehomeyou2014 in Lecce in the de-sacralised church of Sant Francesco. Our curator and host was Alessandra Pomarico @alessandra.pomarico . Very grateful to the team, together, we invented new architecture style - Pastichota period! it was crazy experience and we should digest it!

All objects within the installation were made out of luxurious recycled materials from the past exhibitions at @museocastromedianolecce
