There’s something very rewarding about instructing on the @remote_ropes_ltd Wilderness Rigging classes.

What makes these courses different isn’t simply the equipment we use, it’s the way we think about rigging.

Rather than relying on a catalogue of pre-fabricated systems and a kit-heavy approach, we spend a lot of time exploring improvised rigging, the physics behind our systems, and th mechanics that make them work.

How do forces move through a system? What changes when the angle changes? How can we use the environment around us? How can a simple piece of equipment become part of a much more capable system?

The result is a minimalist approach to rigging that encourages you to think far beyond the box.

This mindset really matters in wilderness environments, where access, equipment and anchor options can be limited. The ability to understand the underlying principles means you can adapt, problem solve and build effective systems with what you actually have available.

Ultimately, it’s about learning to do more with less.

I am consistently blown away by the level of skill and technical knowledge that our students come equipped with. Every course is different and every course is a learning experienced for everyone involved!

Muscat DWS Cliffside Jam 2026 — third year in a row. New location, new formula, still a lot of fun.

Not many people realise that Muscat could become the world’s adventure capital. Despite being a regular city — and the biggest metropolitan area in Oman — it is a remarkably chilled place. The pace of life is very different from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but it is also one of those amazing places where, for most of the year, you can easily find a way to get outside and play.

Fancy some water sports? No problem. Maybe a bit of snorkelling after work, or a freediving session in the morning. An afternoon hike right in the middle of the city, or perhaps an outdoor bouldering session late in the evening just outside the city. But one of my personal favourites is the DWS cliffs.

Most of them are much smaller than those in Musandam, and the rock is also a little different. The routes are generally shorter, which makes them a bit more bouldery. It takes a little effort to swim to the nearest cliffs, while for some areas it is more convenient to use a kayak or paddleboard. Many routes are accessible from ledges, so you can get out of the water and change your shoes.

The new location this year was a refreshing change, and I’m already looking forward to the next one in Musandam! Thank you to everyone for such a great day outdoors, and a huge thank you to the organisers @psicobloc_oman for making it happen.

It was great to catch up with familiar faces, meet new people, and simply enjoy a day of climbing and beautiful surroundings.

Climbing has been a big part of my life for the past six years, but the story started much earlier.

Here is a copy of a post my dad made on Facebook a few days ago, with the caption: “Time invested in a child is never wasted.”

I’ve only added one extra picture from 2025.

My parents and family have been my greatest supporters, and I thank them for helping me do what I love most. I also won’t forget @tracyelkhoueiry who pushed me to get back into climbing after years away from it.

It’s such a relief to realize how much joy climbing and being in nature bring, and that alone is enough. Chasing grades and pushing harder are only secondary.

THE REMINDER.

On January 5th, 2026 I watched as the Uncompahgre river flowed through the bottom of the Ouray Ice Park. Walls that were meant to be plastered with frozen water, stood bare, exposing the red rock underneath.

On January 20th, 2026, the Ouray Ice Park stood poised to open, having recently received consistently cold temperatures and retained sufficient water for farming. This would be the latest opening date since the park’s inception.

I’ve been coming to the Ouray Ice Park since 2006 and photographing professionally in the gorge since 2018. Several months ago, with Winter on the horizon, I started compiling photos from each of the years I was commissioned to document the festival. This was meant to be in celebration of all that this canyon and its community has given to me.

Perhaps, somewhere in the back of my mind, it was also an act to remind me that it is not to be taken for granted.

When I reflect on the photos that I’ve taken in Ouray, the ones that stand out are of the Community. The Friendships born, and strengthened. The Connections built from experiences shared. The Stories formed, told, and celebrated.

When I reflect on the photos I’ve taken in Ouray, I’m reminded of how each year would feel a bit warmer. The accumulation of frozen water, a bit more stubborn. I’m reminded how I saw the warning signs, and chose to downplay them.

I’m reminded of how rarely I simply stood at the bottom of the canyon, silent, in appreciation.

The Ouray Ice Fest has gone ice-less, but it hasn’t gone away, and to me 2026 will carry a new reminder. That Winter is a gift not to be taken for granted. That the act of climbing frozen water shouldn’t be a passive experience, but one of involvement, activism, and education.
