Negative Recon

We wanted a mission, and for our sins, they gave us one.

Before I left Australia, a group of friends and I decided on a last big trail walk. We returned to Lamington, which is where I had organised a small first meet many years ago, and one of its 17km tracks. Inspired by one of my favourite films, Apocalypse Now, to make things fun, I decided we should all have on our various vintage military surplus pieces and make a creative project of it. All armed with film cameras loaded with Ilford XP2 400 black and white stock, we did our best Dennis Hopper impersonations and let loose. The result of all day is Negative Recon, a compilation of everyone’s best shots.

With the increased interest in analog film photography from my audience in DMs recently, I thought I’d share a few of the shots from Negative Recon here. A single image can only communicate so much and as still pictures become more and more frustrated in their ability to grab an audience's attention, the photo book has re-emerged as a means of photographers to encourage engagement with their work. I’ve always believed in freedom of information, so I will put a link to the digital 74 page photobook in my story, downloadable as a high resolution PDF.

There are a lot of great landscape and portrait shots in this book, some taken with just a point and shoot camera. The full shot in the book of slide 5, taken by @tesselvte remains my favourite of the set. It reaffirmed my belief that gear doesn’t account for very much, especially with film photography.

It has been great connecting with so many people both online and off over the years with this hobby. And I do hope others can find motivation and support in expanding their photography socially. Here’s to many more projects and networks in store for us next year.
