Humanities Amped is thrilled to announce that local Baton Rouge poet Chancelier "xero" Skidmore has joined our team as our Fresh Heat Network Facilitator! Xero has spent the last 25 years establishing himself as one of the best spoken word artists in the world. He is a 2013 Individual World Poetry Slam champion and co-founder of the Baton Rouge Poetry Alliance (and Fresh Heat itself!). As a professional teaching artist and arts administrator, he has served as Executive Director of Forward Arts and facilitated high-quality learning experiences for adults and young people throughout the United States. We are excited for xero to lead the next chapter of the Fresh Heat legacy. Stay tuned for this year's Fresh Heat: Teen Open Mic dates--we can't wait to gather with our poetry community at @youthcitylab_br! Want to help bring poetry programming to young folks across Baton Rouge? Make a donation here (there's a copy of the Fresh Heat: Teen Zine in it for you!) givebutter.com/AmpedFreshHeat Thank you to the Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation for supporting this work.

About last night…. After being back in south Louisiana for almost a year, last night at Funkin With Friends was the welcome home I’ve waited years for. Every hug, every dap, every “welcome back boi!”, every affirmation made the trip from New Orleans to Baton Rouge more than worth it. I’ve been rockin with this event since its inception in 2007. It is a cultural staple for Baton Rouge in more ways than I can express. What @themichaelfosterproject has brought to The Varsity for nearly 20 years cannot be rivaled by any live music event in BR — specifically any that foregrounds Black musicians. The holiday edition is always special and for the past four years I was unable to immerse myself in its magic. But last night…last night. I got my get back. Thanks Xero. Thanks John. Thanks Mike. Thanks Cizzle. Thanks CJ. Thanks Joe. Thanks Howard. Thanks Baton Rouge for keeping this event alive & festive. I could not have capped off this year of return in a better fashion.
