If you don’t know anything about Christian French, you might think of him as a storyteller whose art bubbles out from a heavily mystical fountain.
Who takes the time to bury four jars in various locations around the county, each filled with magic coins, lottery tickets, and cryptic notes that promise the finder a reward and art if they contact the artist? Christian is that guy.
I originally met Christian through Sam Faraziono of Equinox, who attempted to describe Christian’s work to me. Unfortunately, the words “he creates operatic scenes with spools of thread” were lost on me that night as the gallery was busy and my mind preoccupied.
Months later, a neighbor walked in and said, “Hey, do you happen to know this guy?” He was holding up a corroded mason jar he had just unearthed while metal detecting deep in the woods. The jar included, among other things, a note from Christian dated ten years prior. The hair stood up on the back of my neck and Christian French suddenly had my full attention.
I have since come to know Christian to be an artist, curator and arts activist who pushes boundaries, connects community, facilitates excitement, and shakes things up. Whether he’s in a spandex suit crusading on public transportation or arranging shipping containers as sculpture, his eclectic and non-conformist gestures testify to art’s ability to conduct and disturb.
Originally trained in photography and cinema, Christian moved to Seattle in 1994. He cut his artistic teeth as an early member of SOIL and has served on the board of Allied Arts, directed ArtSpace Seattle, and been chosen as Artist-in-Residence for Sound Transit, for whom he developed the Link light rail station pictograms.
Currently situated at a studio in Seattle’s Hiawatha Lofts, Christian continues to explore photography as well as sculpture made from thrift store items, all the while working to turn his 1976 VW microbus into a Japanese-style tea room in a project entitled Zen Van: The Wheels of Dharma. @xfrench1 #christianfrench
