The artist translates unquantifiable flows between breath, air, light, gravity, time, the human body and the universe into tangible sensory experiences. The exhibition focuses on sorting out the evolution of Deng Xiao’s creative thinking, and displays her early conceptual models and unrealized art projects concurrently. It also features multiple participatory works by Deng Xiao, inviting audiences to physically engage with the artworks and perceive the subtle tension generated during interaction. Marking Deng Xiao’s first solo museum exhibition, the show consists of eleven kinetic installations, large public sculptures and spatial artworks, presenting the intangible “Qi” embodied by tangible objects throughout her creations.

Reflected Shadow 👥 Two years ago, my fellow Royal College of Art alumna, @signeemma , approached me with an idea to create an exhibition commemorating the 220th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth. It wasn’t about his fairy tales, but rather an exploration of his contradictory personality. Signe works with video and stage design, while @benny_brankovic is a painter. They asked if I knew a sculptor who works with light and shadow. I recommended my dear friend from Chengdu and fellow Saint Martin’s alumna, @xiao2017422 @xiaodengart . This year, @hamtknak , a renowned sound artist and recipient of Denmark’s Lifetime Achievement Award, joined our team. On March 31st, on the way back from the Great Wall, I shared with the photographer Graeme how much I wished to collaborate with a musician capable of improvisation. He told me he knew someone who played the electric pipa. Because of my father’s past craft, my eyes immediately welled up—it felt as if fate was weaving both my father and mother into my work. On April 2nd, after a hectic week in Beijing, the gallery came alive at the last moment—blinking pink eyes, exaggerated orange figures, ethereal silver skeletons. @thruoutin_ played the electric pipa, and I whispered with shadows and ink. I am deeply grateful to the Danish Cultural Center, @dccbeijing @danishculturalinstitute which carried my work My Father and My Son in 2016, and in 2025, gave me a floor of aurora! A Drop of Water 💧 On April 2, 2025, marking the 220th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, I drew inspiration from his manuscript titled A Drop of Water, housed at the @hcandersens.hus in Odense, Denmark. The water mark manuscript captures a poetic understanding of water’s adaptability and purity—a recurring theme in Andersen’s stories, where vulnerable characters fight for their existence. The installation is anchored by a ceiling structure shaped like the Chinese character 禁 (Jin), means ‘forbidden’ and ‘taboo.’ This motif reflects the struggles of many of Andersen’s female characters, who embody the tension between self-expression and the restrictive environments they navigate. In today’s world, women continue to confront similar limitations, with some cultures excluding them entirely from public life. Thank you for an amazing opening @dccbeijing - 02.04.2025 - 15.06.2025 Location: Danish Cultural Center, 798 Art District, Beijing In this exhibition “Reflected Shadows” Danish artists Benny Brankovic and Signe Emma started from the issue of "seeing and being seen", which has caused deep thought among young people in China and the West, and invited artists Xie Rong, Deng Xiao and Thomas Knak to jointly engage in a cross-cultural dialogue on identity and self-presentation. As social media becomes increasingly popular, the fluidity of identity caused by seeing and being seen has been accelerated to an unprecedented level. This exhibition conducts cross-cultural exploration in this context, analyzing how contemporary society exacerbates the existential dilemma, fragile nature and wavering choices of human beings with its infinite possibilities of capriciousness and identity representation. The five works specially created for this exhibition by five Chinese and Danish artists interpret the philosophy of mutual reflection and reflection between me and others, individuals and groups in their own unique artistic forms, and together constitute an overall artwork that explores issues of identity and existence.
