New article alert - go get the newest issue of @oldtimer_markt if you want to read the full story of the CX, which turned half a century old this summer. Featuring my dad’s CX 2000 from July ’74, one of the oldest survivors, and the ’86 CX 25 GTi Turbo 2 of XM Point, the Citroën shop of our trust.

These two cars perfectly symbolize the evolution the CX went through during its 16 year life span. On one side you have the spartan Ur-CX without power steering and a tame two-liter carburetor engine under the hood. On the other, the incredibly smooth Autobahn-stormer, which had an impressive top-speed of 223 km/h thanks to its large 168 hp turbo-four cylinder.

I think it’s a shame that the CX still doesn’t get the respect it deserves and is stuck in the shadow of the DS - in my opinion it has a much cooler interior and is even more comfortable than its iconic predecessor. Not to mention the significantly better performance and economical and fast diesel versions.

The CX still suffers from its reputation as a unreliable and complex diva, which it received in the eighties from largely incompetent mechanics. If serviced properly, these cars are nearly indestructible tho. The completely original Turbo 2 in these pictures hasn’t been driven since 1991 and was back on the road without much effort - even the hydropneumatics worked perfectly.

Jean Giret created an absolutely timeless design under the leadership of Robert Opron. When the production was stopped in 1990 after more then one million cars have been sold, the CX still looked more modern than the majority of its competitors and the aerodynamics were still up to date. The spoilers and the plastic bumpers of the Series 2 may not be everyones taste but typical for it’s time - I used to dislike the facelift version, but now I dream of a late CX Turbo like this one.

Which CX version do you prefer and why?

Thanks for the amazing photos @maximilian.balazs
