▪️The Art of Making Covers Before Digital Coloring▪️

The original cover of The New Mutants #11 (USA), by Walt Simonson and Tom Mandrake, is a perfect example of how striking effects were achieved before digital coloring.

Thanks to material shared by Ferran Delgado, we can see how the fiery glow of the character wasn’t rendered in inks alone. Instead, it was built on a separate overlay, used to guide the colorist and the craftsman known as the separator—a now-extinct role in comics production.

These separators worked with transparent sheets, technical notes, and layered guides to indicate where light, heat, or energy effects should appear. The blazing figure here was inked in black with white highlights to map out the color treatment later applied by hand.

It’s a fascinating look at the craftsmanship and precision behind classic 1980s comic covers—long before Photoshop.

JIM LEE WAS DRAWING WITH HIS INKER IN MIND

Scott Williams didn’t simply adapt his inks to Jim Lee’s pencils. According to Williams, the influence also travelled in the opposite direction.

In his October 15, 2020 interview with SYFY WIRE, discussing their partnership and X-Men years, Williams explained that he already had an established inking style when Lee entered the business. Lee began incorporating marks into his pencils that anticipated Williams’s treatment:

“He kind of penciled to my strengths.”

Williams said some of those marks were not originally native to Lee’s style: Lee included them because he knew what his collaborator would do. Over time, Williams also adapted to Lee, learning to embrace more spontaneity and less rigid precision.

Inktober day 13: Gambit - the Wheel of Fortune ironic how that worked out!

The card signifies a willingness to take risks guided by intuition—mirroring Gambit’s core identity as a card-throwing gambler who relies on chance, odds, and split-second gambles. Gambit literally uses cards as his signature weapon and means of defining his actions, famously channeling his kinetic energy through them in battle. In Marvel’s special tarot depictions, he is directly associated with the Wheel of Fortune card. The Wheel of Fortune deals with life’s unpredictable shifts—where fortunes can flip in an instant (good luck turning to bad, or vice versa)—fitting a character whose life is defined by luck, charm, and walking the line between salvation and self-destruction.
During events like X of Swords, Gambit explicitly weaponized the Wheel of Fortune tarot card itself by charging it with his kinetic powers to force a “stroke of good luck” that blasted open a locked door.l

🌙✨ INKTOBER — MOONSTAR! 🏹

Under a sky full of stars, even dreams can take the shape of legends.

Dani Moonstar — a proud warrior of the New Mutants, guided by her Cheyenne heritage and the power to bring fears and dreams to life. Sometimes, the strongest heroes are the ones who know how to listen to the spirits. 🌌🐎

Wanted to give this piece a magical, folklore-inspired feel.

Which New Mutant should I draw next? 👀

Inktober day 12: Lady Deathstrike - the Chariot

The Chariot signifies moving forward with absolute focus, refusing to let doubts or detours pull you off course. Yuriko’s entire existence is defined by her singular, unyielding obsession: reclaiming her father’s legacy and killing Wolverine to restore her family’s honor. She possesses a ferocious, unstoppable drive that perfectly mirrors the upright energy of the card. Traditionally, the Charioteer guides a black and a white sphinx facing opposite directions, requiring mental mastery to keep them pulling forward together. Lady Deathstrike is a literal synthesis of opposites: she is part human and part machine, a cyborg who must constantly balance her organic emotional fury with her rigid cybernetic enhancements and computer-driven logic.

The figure on the card wears heavily decorated armor as a symbol of victory and physical/spiritual transformation. Yuriko famously traded away her own flesh to become a living weapon, bonding an Adamantium skeleton to her body and replacing her fingers with lethal 12-inch talons. Her metal body is the ultimate manifestation of the Chariot’s protective, war-ready armor. When reversed, The Chariot warns of blind aggression, obsession, and losing control by bulldozing everything in your path. Yuriko frequently slips into this shadow aspect. Her hyper-fixation on vengeance has consumed her humanity, turning an honorable pursuit into an unhinged, destructive crusade that often leads to her own ruin.

The Hierophant represents a knowledgeable mentor who imparts wisdom, spiritual perspective, and structured learning. Xavier runs a school (Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters) dedicated to teaching young mutants how to control their powers and integrate into society. The Hierophant governs formal institutions, dogmas, and established frameworks. Xavier frequently acts as an authority figure, establishing a formal code of ethics (the X-Men’s mission) and trying to negotiate within human-mutant political and legal structures. Traditionally, the Hierophant sits between two pillars as a bridge between the divine/sacred and the earthly/material plane. Xavier positions himself as a philosopher-king trying to bridge the divide between baseline humanity and mutantkind, preaching a structured philosophy of peaceful coexistence.

The card personifies a fatherly guide who upholds a moral compass. Xavier often assumes a paternal role over his students, guiding them through a shared moral code. When reversed, The Hierophant can represent dogmatic control, hypocrisy, or feeling restricted by one’s own structure. Critics and story arcs involving Xavier often highlight his secret manipulations, paternalistic control freak tendencies, or the flaws of building an institution around a single leader’s ideology.
