A brief detour from tech talk to share a meaningful part of my career life journey... @sthomasmoffat here grateful to be hosting for and a part of @illuminatrix_dops UK side of the pond.

I can't help but reflect, at this time, on the incredibly valuable experiences I had in Southern California in 2022/2023... my heart goes out to all of SoCal residents. My film friends have lost homes. Between the pandemic, the strikes, and now the fires a my heart holds all the space for you, a brilliant film creative and kind community.

The life path of an artist is never a straight line. It has its peaks, and its valleys. The human experience has its challenges, and it is in those most challenging hopelessly lost moments of doubt that we find the light. Sorcha.

That light for me and my career came by way of packing in all of my comforts in Canada, early 2022. As Covid started to subside and it was safer to travel across the continent, I knew I had to spread my wings to discover if I truly wanted to stay in the game. How serious was I about levelling up my career in this business? How bad did I want this?

I rode my BMW G650gs from Vancouver to LA to find out. I thought I was only staying for a few weeks... that turned into 2 years. It was the community and the culture of comradery that filled my heart. I was also accepted into the @the__asc Vision program, wherein I was welcomed and met so many of my hero and shero DPs. They gave me the confidence to know I belong too.

@womeninmediainc awarded and acknowledged my work making me feel seen as a cinematographer and a woman. @theicfc gave me a platform to talk about my skills in virtual production helping me find my voice.

Many many more people and companies lifted me up along the way, because I showed up. It was not a hand out, it was a reflection bouncing back to me for what I showed up with. Gratitude.

I was expanded by the kindness of community, and of strangers who became friends. The time I put in even during the strikes, living modestly, resourcefully, same shirt, on my bike everyday... (read in comments)

Thankyou @britishcinematographer magazine!!

Hot off the press! Excited to share this fantastic article by Michael Burns for BC mag, and Editor-In-Chief @zoemutter , and team! This is part of the - Focus On: Virtual Production Volume 2, in print and just released online!

Thankyou for including me as a cinematographer working in virtual production!

This event was for @smptehollywood @smpteconnect led by @i.am_xtina Christina Novak and @topicalfool Catherine Crawley, facilitated by @xr.studios in Hollywood. The XRs hard working humans: @JTRooney @_adventuredevon_ Hubner VPS, @ksan6967 TD, VP Producer @JaydenArriola and many more on the team. The VAD @halonentertainment , @luxmc_ Machina Consulting with PD @RickRifle.

Partnering with @lamdadrama (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art), directed by @MichelleBonnard produced by @JRossMcKenzie and their talented cast; we created 4 scenes from known shows and re-enacted them in a fashion like live theatre, in a volume.

@aputure.lighting lighting, @cookeoptics , @fujinonlenses , @reddigitalcinema , @JLFisher , @GripThis , @birnsandsawyer , @mazinklitesbcglobalnet donated gear for the filming of scenes. Also special thanks to @mari_birns and @joseph.johnson.736 for camera and Sarah support! Appreciate you all very much!

Crew! So many great humans contributed time and energy and more gear to make this come together. Read the article to learn about my process and the great team work involved. Also see my previous reels on IG for crew tags and mentions.

I talk about the meeting of 3 cultures for this specific project: Theatre, Virtual Production, and Cinema. Each has its own language and logic, yet collectively we share the same vision. To arrive at the best outcome we blended 3 cultures, and created something really special!

Please checkout the amazing edition full of great #VirtualProduction insights. I'm honoured to be a part of this collective, and looking forward to co-creating more amazing stories together!

Testing film stocks in an LED-wall environment, the image examples featured in American Cinematographer. While film (top) and digital (bottom) are similar, and more so than I thought they would be, I found that film showed better handling of highlights and produced deeper blacks than the digital. The daylight-exterior comparison demonstrates the digital sensor blowing out the highlights more, and also shows chromatic aberration from the Super Speeds [not seen with film] on the edge of the boy’s shoulder. In the image with the mother comforting the young boy, the shadows are deeper in the film image. In my opinion, the digital appears to have a light bounce-return on the actress’ face, even though the light setup was exactly the same in both instances.
