Johfra, The adoration of Pan, oil on panel, 190 x 300 cm / 74.8 x 118.1 inch, 1979.

Johfra started painting this triptych on the 17th of June 1978 and finished it on the 3rd of January 1979. In his journal he wrote: “My new style announces itself within The adoration of Pan. This painting is the breakthrough and zenith in the realization of my new direction that I have envisioned for many years.” Johfra made a conscious decision to explore more subjects in ancient mythology and occult sources after he felt like the art world saw him purely as an esoteric artist after gathering recognition from his Zodiac series in the mid 70s. Throughout his life he studied many scriptures ranging from religion and ancient mythology to the occult and surrealistic modernists.

We had the absolute privilege to uncover this masterpiece from storage and study it in detail. Did you know the biggest Johfra collection in the world has been stored for decades and is actually for sale along with works from @ernstfuchs_official , @giger_art, @petergric, @kriskuksi and many others. Check out @pathosgallery for more info and read about the Johfra collection at @darkartandcraft .

Johfra stressed that the essence of the painting is best expressed by Chesterton who suggests that with the "death" of Pan came the advent of theology. To this effect, Chesterton claimed, "It is said truly in a sense that Pan died because Christ was born. It is almost as true in another sense that men knew that Christ was born because Pan was already dead. A void was made by the vanishing world of the whole mythology of mankind, which would have asphyxiated like a vacuum if it had not been filled with theology."

G.K. Chesterton, "The End of the World", The Everlasting Man, 1925

@tefaf Living with Art

@borisvervoordt lives in the Vlaeykensgang, a medieval alleyway in Antwerp’s city center that was formerly a coffee warehouse. The home's history can be traced back to the 16th century.

Axel discovered this area when he was 21 years old and spent years restoring the houses together with his wife May. One of them became the first location of the family’s growing business. It was the start of our company and a symbol of the family's five-decade path of living with art.

Boris still calls the Vlaeykensgang home today together with his husband, writer @michaelgards

Boris remembers biking around the rooms in between furniture and sculpture (“and luckily not breaking anything”) and even has vivid memories of one of his first birthday parties.

“It’s amazing because this party was held in the same room that is now our current sitting room.”

Explore Vervoordt’s philosophy behind collecting art and how they’ve created a home together in this video from #TEFAF’s Living with Art series.
