THE BEAUTY SUPPLY

Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE THE BEAUTY SUPPLY! I don’t even have to say “store” — y’all know what it is 💅🏿 I’ve taken my friends on field trips to explore new ones, I’ve done photoshoots in some, I even filmed some episodes of @professionalblackgirl in a few of them.

So of course I had to represent this Black girl sanctuary in my Artist-in-Residence series. Look at the tray — I don’t even have to name the products — you know what it is 💁🏾‍♀️💁🏽‍♀️💁🏿‍♀️

You got THE BAMBOO.
You got HOT COMB ‘n STOVE.
Now, get into THE BEAUTY SUPPLY!

I just had a moment of reflection seeing @nobodyfamous ‘s digital animation for THE HOT COMB N’ STOVE—I have had the PRIVILEGE of working with some AMAZINGLY talented Black women artists like…

1) my current collaboration with @syreetagates / @mostincrediblestudio
2) @dreavisionart, who has designed so many pieces for me, including this #ProfessionalBlackGirl rendition of “Let’s Jam”
3 + 4) two different renditions of the PBG avatar by @veronicajamisonart
5) THE @professionalblackgirl logo by @hadiyawilliams

…to name just a few.

Thank you Sistren! I don’t care if you get sick of me saying it—THANK YOU.

because today is the day we like to love out loud. so if I’m loving anybody, it’s Black people.

Had to dig in the vaults because I haven’t been online and I’ve missed the latest and the bestest. But Black love is forever, ain’t it?

I love you. And us.
Always.

BLACK JOY IS RESISTANCE

I won’t tell you how long it took me to create this post. You should know that my IG archives are MASSIVE. I have all the posts I save organized into folders. One such folder is labeled ‘BLACK JOY.’ So you should also know that for as long as it took me to curate this love offering, I enjoyed every minute of it because I had to sort through more than a hundred posts just to select these. I’ve been smiling all morning 😊

TIP: Start you a Black Joy folder 🥰

HAPPY 🖤❤️💚

One of the most powerful, long lasting, far-reaching lessons I have ever learned is to think critically.

As an educator, I pride myself on encouraging my students, whoever they may be, to think critically.

We are literally watching history be rewritten in front of our faces. Yes, we have public and systemic work to do to correct that, but we also have work to do in our own communities, and at our own kitchen tables.

Despite what our foremothers and forefathers warned, we out here televising the revolution. So I won’t say much. But what I will say is let’s teach our children that just because it’s in their textbooks, or just because their teachers said so, don’t make it true. Respectfully. But in order to do that, we have to know the truth ourselves.

Just saying.

PS - Slide 3: any time I teach the difference in these terms, I literally watch my students shift. Instantly. One is an identity, the other is a condition. One is a state, the other is a process. Only one allows for our humanity, only one allows for our freedom. See it?
