Three rooms that reminded me why I do what I do. 🌍

This summer, three spaces gave me something I wish every artist had — I break down what each one taught me in the video. But here’s what I didn’t say there: none of it was about the institutions. It was about the people who showed up ready to build something more human, together, outside the usual gates.

Deep gratitude to the ones who made them possible — @yaleism’s Institute of Sacred Music and the Institute of African Studies at @univofgh (Black Sacred Arts Conference), Leslie Tilley and the team at @mitmta’s Music Theory Pedagogies Reimagined, and @hedtearne, who built @un_settlement at Avaloch Farm.

The right room doesn’t just make space for your work. It reminds you you’re allowed to make it as fully and as freely as you are. That’s what I want for every artist reading this — and what I’m dreaming up more of myself. 🤎

It was so beautiful to be part of the film screening and workshop All Trees Bear Witness, alongside @rustyloon_ , artist and culture worker @cbc.3 and musician and folklorist @almanacbehind

The film, The Witness Tree, is out now on YouTube. It chronicles events in my home place, Virginia’s, past and present relying on the voices and stories of both communities and the trees — witness trees — that experienced these events. Reflecting makes me think: all trees bear witness yes, but also how we are so like them. We bear witness. To social and environmental injustices. Catastrophes. Also beauty like the music we explored with the oak during our workshop, moments of connection, or the sparks where community triumphs over the systems that isolate and silence.

What does it mean to “bear” witness? How do we carry this weight? How might we carry it more like a tree — in an entangled web of community and reciprocity, rather than isolation?

I do not have answers, yet. I will keep thinking of this.

Thank you to all participants, @yale , @yaleism and the team that made this possible, and of course, the oak, trees, and other non-humans that we co-create alongside.

✨Come, Holy Spirit. Yesterday, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale welcomed 15 MDiv students from the Class of 2029 and a MDiv student from the Class of 2027 at our annual Matriculation Eucharist and celebration.
Preaching was the Rev'd Dr. @crisp.justin '14 MDiv, '20 PhD and the Eucharist was celebrated by Dean Thomas. 🔉This audio features the Berkeley Hymn, written for the school's sesquicentennial in 2004 with music by the Rev'd @alancmurchie '07 MDiv. 🎶
May the Holy Spirit guide these students in learning, discernment, prayer, and service. "Tonight we commit and recommit ourselves to a Rule of Life that gives substance and shape to our community."
