The world may be uncertain, ever-changing, and confusing, and we may never have all of the answers we hope we would have to the important questions, but what we do have are moments. Each moment is a new opportunity to think about things from a different perspective, ground ourselves in the world around us, and touch base with ourselves and identify what we need. In addition to finding tangible ways to survive, it’s important that we find the things that help ensure our emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual survival and wellbeing too! Being part of the Department of Psychiatry involves even reminding ourselves of the skills we have and ways we can take care of ourselves in these moments. As we say goodbye to this day and say hello to a brand new one, can we make it a practice throughout our day to check in with ourselves? To ensure we get rest? To notice our needs, goals, and all the work it took for us to be right where we are! These moments are critical for our survival. I am so lucky to be part of an internship program that challenges me to take care of myself as I help take care of the community, ensuring that we all not only survive, but thrive! Thank you for tuning in to today’s takeover, and I hope your moments are of full of peace and compassion. - Gabe

Dr. Ariadna Forray is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. She received her B.A. in neuroscience from Bryn Mawr and her M.D. from Harvard. Her interest in women’s mental health developed as a resident in psychiatry at Yale, when treating a woman with no significant prior psychiatric history who presented with postpartum psychosis. She wanted to learn more about the unique factors of the perinatal period that lead to these periods of susceptibility for women and to understand the role of reproductive hormones. It was this curiosity with the desire to help women like this patient during this vulnerable period of their lives that defined Dr. Forray’s path in psychiatry. During her residency training, she joined the Neuroscience Research Training Program and conducted clinical research on posttraumatic stress disorder in the perinatal period. Because of the importance of addressing substance use disorders in this population, she pursued advanced training in addiction psychiatry and focused her clinical research on the development of novel treatments for perinatal substance use. She is Co-Director of the Center for Wellness of Women and Mothers, a reproductive psychiatry research program. As a principal investigator and co-investigator on several NIH-funded grants, she has developed and implemented addiction treatment interventions, successfully recruited pregnant women with substance use disorders for participation in clinical research, and collaborated with researchers and clinicians across disciplines. She is also involved in overseeing the women’s mental health educational initiatives across the department and medical school. #women #mentalhealth #substanceuse #postpartum #postpartumpsychosis #addictionpsychiatry

#Repost @yalepsych • • • • • • TOMORROW: Join us for another Yale Psychiatry resident takeover, starting at 6 a.m. here on Instagram. Robin Bonomi, MD, (@runformedicine) is a First-Year Resident in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. Bonomi, a Massachusetts native, chose psychiatry because of her interest in the patient population and in psychiatric research, primarily understanding epigenetics behind psychiatric illness. Specifically, her research interests are centered in stress disorders, examining the epigenetics and predisposition for stress resilience or development of post-traumatic stress disorder. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Dr. Bonomi will give a look at inpatient work at Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, as well as child didactics. Questions for Dr. Bonomi? Comment below or send us a DM and we’ll make sure she gets them!

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT! WHO: Dave Mancini Class of 2020 WHERE are they now? "I’m currently pursuing a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at Yale University." What did you like most about residency? "First and foremost, I LOVED my co-residents! Despite having a large class, it really felt like a small family and it felt great to have such a tightknit team of people around me for support. I also liked that we had so many incredible and diverse opportunities in our training—the diversity of training sites and intensity of exposures really trained us to be well-rounded and well-versed psychiatrists!" #psychiatry #recentgrad #pastresident #residentspotlight #fellowship #psychiatryandlaw #residency #fellow #psychresidency #psychresident

Something that has affected my life and the way I show up is my dad. He had a severe stroke and being unable to communicate with him in the ways I had before has really changed my perspective in life. He poured so much of himself into me, and I know that who I am today is because of his example. He was also the first real feminist in my life. Thinking about him allows me the mental capacity and courage to show up as I am and be myself. People would not expect this of me, but I get very nervous before giving talks! It’s his belief in me that allows me to find the words to thrive. I’ve really come to accept the power and reassurance in being led by my father’s presence and spirit. I CAN do it, I am deserving and worthy. My voice has value.   In my work, I deliberately sponsor younger women in their careers who are deserving of a platform to bring their authenticity and intellectual capacity to the work of mental health. Importantly, I am dedicated to creating liberated spaces for young women in hopes of preserving their mental health and reinforcing that they are WORTH IT and DESERVING of their spaces in the academy. These spaces can be transformative and reparative, and they provide the freedom to talk about careers, sexism, racism, sexuality… a plethora of intersecting identities that are often ignored in the setting of a largely sexist, racist white supremacist culture.

There’s a really great new docuseries on @mtv called #16andrecovering and for the finale I talked to a bunch of addiction experts about how the show changes the narrative around teens and #addiction that we typically see in the media (You know, the “bad kid” who “chooses” drugs) I usually complain a lot about TV and the portrayals of #mentalhealth, but the stories here are real, raw, challenging, hard, but focused on recovery and hope.
