One of the hardest parts of the conversation about mental health is that without meaning to, we make assumptions about other people instead of actually listening to them. We want to qualify each other’s struggles, instead of asking. We don’t want to say the hard stuff out loud, and of course we don’t. In the rare cases that we do, having someone questions our authenticity, is crushing. But there is hope and there is always opportunity. Mental health is personal and invisible. Which is what makes it so tricky to navigate. But what I can promise you is that there are so many amazing people out there just waiting to pour in. If you need resources or support, please reach out. You can also find incredible human stories and community here: www.yanamom.com www.afterbirth.org

I’ve partnered with @yanam2m to create media around all the incredible things that these women are doing for the community, for mothers, and for longevity in the maternal mental health space. When I had my first child ten years ago, I was completely unprepared for the lack of real life, applicable resources that existed for me. I wasn’t messing around when it came to preparation either. I was thirty five and had suffered an ectopic pregnancy prior to successfully carrying Creigh to term. I thought that I had it in the bag. What I didn’t know was how many layers of care I would really need. Yana is providing peer support, education, community events and a community room that looks like a Costco from all of the generous donations by, well, everyone. Their hearts are so completely in this, and it’s a joy to have any small part in it. Thank you for having me @yanam2m … I can’t wait to keep working. #maternalmentalhealth #yanam2m #motherhood

I find the hardest part of trying something totally new—or applying a unique, albeit slightly “crazy,” concept to a system routinely functioning in a different way—is that there will be some skepticism and pushback. You will have to stick with it in challenging situations, wear your gumption like a suit. You will have to know without knowing that just because it’s never been done before doesn’t mean it can’t be. I believe in my ideas, and I believe in my community. I believe in the relationships that I have spent years developing, and I believe in my craft. Sometimes that place can feel really lonely, but I promise you, it doesn’t stay that way. The right people will believe in you, too, and eventually—but in no way linearly—you will see it taking shape. Keep. Going. Love, Regan

I did my first book podcast! I joined Nikki and Gina Schrek on Let’s Be Real: Mama Journeys to talk motherhood, burnout, and the standard we hold ourselves to. I shared the story behind Be Your Own Medicine, including the part I don’t always lead with, that it came from collapse, not inspiration. Nikki founded YANAm2m, You Are Not Alone Mom to Mom, and what she’s built for other mothers is the real deal. Out now wherever you listen to podcast!
