What a beautiful evening celebrating The New Yorker at Joe’s Pub! ✨

In 2020, The New Yorker invited me to create a cover commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. While the amendment marked a victory for women’s suffrage, Black women continued to face barriers to voting. I wanted to honor Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and women’s rights advocate who fought for voting rights for all.

That cover of Sojourner Truth became a defining point in my art career, and I am grateful for @fmtoon and the team at @newyorkermag for making all of this possible.

So grateful for the beautiful evening, the conversations, and everyone who made it special 💛

Have you been Opening? Cuz we've been Opening...! In fact, this has been one of the more memorable US Opens in recent history—and certainly the most exciting of this year's Majors (in our unhumble opinion). To celebrate, tennis aficionado and creative wiz @yangblog will pop in on Sunday to sign copies of his beautiful new kids book "Swing!" which tells the story of a mid-western girl who grows up emulating Arthur Ashe's style, on and off the court! So SWING by on Sunday round 1:30 to meet a wonderful author/illustrator and pick up a personalized copy just in time for #USOpen finals.

Such an amazing panel tonight!!! I learned sooo much. Eugenia is the gem behind the whole entire visual world you see at the US OPEN 2026. She took us from the sketches to the final work, talk about SCALE. I had no idea how ENORMOUS the world of illustration really is. & Jamessss, thank youuu!! I can’t wait to read SWING to my 1000 nieces and nephews. 😂 I didn’t even know Arthur Ashe was that fly.

Swing!

A young girl learns how to manage her emotions and channel her tennis hero, Arthur Ashe, in the new book by Geisel Award-winning creator James Yang.

A young girl loves to play tennis with her father. And dreams of being like her hero, Arthur Ashe. But sometimes her brain feels like it’s bouncing, just like a tennis ball. And it’s hard not to lose her temper. Dad reminds her that being a tennis star is about how you act both on and off the court.

Geisel Award–winning author and illustrator James Yang has created an unforgettable story about the power we have over our emotions when we take a deep breath, focus, and swing!

📢📚 HEADS UP! The US Open starts August 23 — and we have the perfect courtside read. 🎾

📖 About the book: SWING! by Geisel Award-winning creator James Yang follows a young Korean girl in the 1970's who loves tennis, her dad, and her hero Arthur Ashe — but whose brain "feels like it's bouncing, just like a tennis ball" when frustration hits on and off the court.

😮‍💨 Her dad teaches her that the best players aren't the ones who never get angry; they're the ones who learn to breathe first and swing second.

🍎 Educators: It's a great introduction to tennis legend Arthur Ashe, who became the first Black man to win the US Open in 1968 in the same stadium at Flushing Meadows that bears his name today.

💡 Try pairing this with a two-minute mindfulness breathing break before a test or when talking about managing emotions.
