A very delicious Shabbat tasting featuring lots of bubbles and @recibar homemade Jachnun.

Also, hummus and traditional method sparkling? A bloody lovely pairing.

2024 has been a wild year (one with far more middle-of-the-night siren wake ups than we’d prefer) but it’s been full of beautiful gatherings with my fellow wine snobs who also love to guess what’s in the glass.

We ended the year strong with a night of Israeli and Greek wines, celebrating with candle lighting and wine swirls just as sirens rang across central Israel.

Happy New Year 💙 🍾

Nothing brings a dramatic week to a close like a failed attempt at sabrage (or shall we call it sabotage?). Luckily we salvaged most of the @champagnetaittinger (and @yarinstern_ wasn’t injured in the process!)

Saturday’s blind tasting fun, this time with a New World theme (minus the Champagne, because we just can’t live without the good bubbles). It is always an absolute treat to try Israeli wines from the early 2000s, and you’ve got to love those tertiary aromas! We sipped on a 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon from Segal, and a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Sirah blend from @tishbi.winery that delivered despite being stored upright in a warm place for the good part of 20 years. Both delicious, smoky, and a touch herbaceous.

A few other countries entered into the mix - shout out to the Malvasia and Trebbiano blend from Uruguay that we were all adamant was Gewurtztraminer, and the Californian Pinot Noir brought by yours truly that reminded me that I’m definitely an old world Pinot kind of girl.

An Italian theme means the majority of the group turns up to a blind tasting with red wine, so the ratio of people to decanters was a little more skewed than usual.

The Ottin Pinot Noir was my favourite - I went with my gut with the Pinot Nero guess, but we all floated back and forth between this, Nerello and Dolchetto. It was also a treat to taste the Gaja Promis again after tasting the 2019 a few years back 🇮🇹

Wow, this little wine hobby of ours is fun isn’t it?

A bit of Saturday night wine flighting featuring existential threats and Prosecco sabrage from a fifth floor balcony

A Saturday night blind tasting (and you bet it was hard to get up for work on Sunday) where everyone brings a bottle and we make it through wine 14 without too many scratches.

A few highlights:

🍾 Brugnon NV Rosé Champagne - delightfully ripe Pinot Noir, creamy, incredibly textured and refreshing. A fun story on this one, as it’s the same Champagne I sabered with a sword in the tasting room at the winery a couple of summers ago.

🍷 @reynekewines Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Stellenbosch 🇿🇦 - organic, biodynamic and wild fermented, made from earlier harvest Savvy B which ferments in well seasoned French oak. An immediate whiff of delicate roasted vanilla on the nose, taking us to Chenin or Chardonnay territory, and you bet we were surprised at the reveal!

🍷 Terra Vita Vinum La Bigottiere Savennieres 2019, Loire 🇫🇷 - incredibly ripe and textured Chenin, hints of sweet oak and nuttiness but plenty of lemon, white flowers and stone fruits shining through.

🍷 Schäfer-Fröhlich Weisser Burgunder 2013, Nahe 🇩🇪 - medium gold, absolute decadence. Sweet vanilla, peach and apricot, off dry (although the label suggests otherwise).

🍷 Channing Daughters Cabernet Franc 2019, Long Island 🇺🇸 - a true dick move here from me, with everyone going straight to Pinot Noir from Burgundy then to Blaufrankish. Medium garnet in the glass, a little bit funky, mushroom, earth, smoke and red cherries. @cdwwine

🍷 @bravdowinery Landmark 2015 🇮🇱 - a flagship blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a mix of oak vessels used for ageing (75% French and 25% American). Highly expressive and full bodied with rich black fruit and beautifully integrated oak.

🍷 Domaine Michel Mallard Chorey-Les-Beaune, Les Beaumonts, Burgundy 🇫🇷 - confusing at first, a very earthy and tangy expression of Pinot Noir. Vibrant, crisp red cherry and a touch of menthol.

🍷 Chateau Romer du Hayot Sauternes 1989, Bordeaux 🇫🇷 - deep and decadent, intense honey, dried fruit and caramel. Delectable, sweet, and it’s always a treat to drink something older than most people in the room.
