They say your Champagne Birthday is when the stars align.

I turned 27 on the 27th, and suddenly, the whole night felt like a perfectly poured glass of bubbly 🥂, a little wholesome, a lot of cute, and completely 2000’s-styled nostalgia.

Maybe the only thing better than dancing on tables is realizing your best chapter is just beginning.

Is this what grown up magic feels like?

Stills from the documentary “Metamorphosis” Directed by Catherine Barinoff and Produced by Alex Leon, Presented by Aquarius Media Productions Ltd.

Metamorphosis is a visually intimate, experimental documentary exploring the fluidity of age and identity through the eyes of women and children. Set within stylized domestic spaces, the film blends poetic interviews, symbolic objects, and cinematic compositions—tracing the emotional and physical evolution of the self like stages in a butterfly’s life.

Through a series of reflective portraits, the film captures moments of transformation—from childhood wonder to the wisdom of mature age, from pregnancy to self-realisation. Interweaving nature imagery and tactile rituals, Metamorphosis invites the viewer into a sensory dialogue on time, memory, and the beauty found in becoming.

Stills from the Single-Take Film “The High-Energy Breakup” Directed by Luigi Cogliani, Written by Michael M. Goessler and Produced by Jasmina Pawlewska & Teena Dernaika.

During a romantic dinner arranged by Megan for her secret lover Alex, an unexpected early return by Megan’s boyfriend Neil—accompanied by his secret fling, Jade—throws everything into chaos. As shocking revelations unravel over wine, insults, and shattered collectibles, Megan’s fury ignites a spectacular domestic meltdown. Amidst the carnage, Alex and Jade discover a surprising chemistry of their own. A sharp, chaotic comedy of modern relationships, betrayal, and unexpected connection.

🎥 Behind the Lens:

As the cinematographer of this ambitious single-take film, I was faced with the challenge of capturing a tightly choreographed emotional rollercoaster—unfolding in real time, inside a modest apartment, with no cuts or coverage to fall back on. The film’s explosive narrative demanded a camera that could flow seamlessly through space, stay emotionally attuned to each beat, and adapt to rapid changes in blocking and mood.

The apartment’s limited space meant every movement had to be meticulously planned. Using the Sony FX3 on a gimbal, I had to weave the camera through narrow space, around and under the furniture, and between actors during moments of chaos—without disrupting their performances.

Conventional lighting setups were impossible due to the real-time nature of the shot. All lights had to be pre-rigged and invisible. Apart from the practicals, we lit the entire apartment using Aputure F22c & F21c, Astera Titan Tubes, and Aputure MC12s, all mounted to the ceiling and shaped the light in a way that felt soft, natural, and consistent across the room, while also providing contrast and depth to keep the image cinematic.

This shoot was a dance. Every frame was a collective effort between the director, actors, camera, focus, lighting, and sound—all tightly synchronized. It’s one of the most creatively fulfilling—and technically challenging project I’ve worked on as a cinematographer. Deep gratitude to every person who contributed their talent and dedication to bringing this film to life.
