Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful, intelligent, and strong mama. My mama, who taught me how to be a good person and to be kind to everyone regardless of who they were. My mama, who always encouraged me to follow my dreams and my heart. My mama, who was always by my side everytime we moved to a new country and had to start from scratch. My mama, who always stood up for me. But most importantly, my mama, who chose to adopt me when nobody else wanted me. My mama, who gave me a life that many orphans in Pakistan dream of. Thank you mama, I owe you everything. Love you. ❤️

Happy birthday to my mama, without whom I most definitely would have not survived as a child. From running onto a busy highway as a 2 year old, to shoving my fingers into electrical sockets, almost choking on a 3 foot pipe, getting chased by a cobra, almost suffocating myself with a plastic bag - my mom was always running around after me making sure I didn’t off myself. Thank you for always believing in me, and giving me everything I needed to become the person I am today. 💕 🥰

My mother took this photograph of one of the many beautiful laburnum trees back home. In summer, entire streets are lined with a sea of yellow on either side. ⁣ ⁣ The weather there is incredibly hot these days. It always is at this time of year. The average hovers around 40 degrees Celsius in the day. In some areas, it climbs up to 50 degrees. The elderly and children are the first to suffer. Many die from heatstroke and dehydration. And don’t even get me started on the limited access of clean drinking water for low income communities. ⁣ ⁣ I haven’t experienced a South Asian summer in 6 years, but I still remember how it felt: like your entire body was slowly melting. And God help you if you touch a metal surface, or decide to walk barefoot!⁣ ⁣ Canadian summers are just perfect. But what drives me crazy, is all the damn air conditioning. Everywhere I go - houses, malls, office buildings, are so heavily air conditioned that I can’t even enjoy what little summer we do have! ⁣ ⁣ When I lived back home, before we installed an air conditioner, sometimes I would drench myself and my mattress with a bucket of water just to get some relief from the crippling heat. ⁣Now I miss that heat :/ ⁣ In North America, we take things for granted. We are so reliant on technology, and so used to our little comforts. Some don’t know and will never know what it feels like to live without it.
