Mulaqat | Ayyankali and the Social Reform Movement

A thoughtful and engaging session at Other Books with M Nisar, exploring Ayyankali’s significant role in Kerala’s social reform movement.

Nisar offered a nuanced perspective on Ayyankali as an organic intellectual, visionary, and highly organised leader; someone who recognised the injustices of the caste system through lived experience and transformed that awareness into organised resistance.

The talk also explored how Ayyankali used attire, physical presence, and everyday social practices as forms of resistance, challenging practices that placed oppressed communities in positions of inferiority. His legacy, as the discussion highlighted, extends far beyond the familiar image of him riding a bullock cart through spaces where Dalits were prohibited.

The session became especially engaging through the curious and nuanced questions from the attendees, creating a meaningful exchange that added depth to the lecture.

The evening concluded with everyone coming together for casual conversations over tea, extending the discussion and making space for further interaction and reflection.

I just finished watching ‘Main Actor Nahin Hoon’ and I am completely spellbound. It instantly reminded me of Abbas Kiarostami’s masterpiece ‘Certified Copy’ in the way it handles human connection. The entire film relies on the raw power of conversation, peeling back layers of identity and vulnerability with every minute. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Chitrangada Satarupa deliver incredibly restrained performances through a simple screen. Do not miss this gem.

‘കോഴിക്കോടിന്റെ വഴിയോരം’

കോഴിക്കോട്ടുകാർ പൊതുവെ പാരഗണിൽ പോവാൻ മടിക്കും. തിരക്ക് തന്നെയാണ് പ്രധാന ഹേതു. അല്ലെങ്കിലും നാട്ടുസിദ്ധനെ കാണാൻ ദൂരദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണല്ലോ ജനം പുറപ്പെട്ട് വരുക. പത്ത് പേരെയും കൊണ്ട് രാവിലെ പത്തരമണിക്ക് പോയാലത്തെ കഥ പറയണോ. കാത്ത് നിന്നും ഇരുന്നും പശി കലശലായി. കഴിപ്പിന് മുമ്പുള്ള പ്രാർത്ഥന ഇപ്പോൾ ഫോട്ടോ എടുപ്പാണല്ലോ. പ്ലേറ്റ് നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ പടമെടുക്കാൻ മറന്നതിൽ നാട്ടിലുള്ളവരോടും അവധി കഴിഞ്ഞ് തിരിച്ച് പറന്നവരോടും ക്ഷമ ചോദിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് പോസ്റ്റുന്നു.

My dad ran a raw-materials supply unit from the veranda of our ancestral home. It doubled up as my first lesson in diversity—long before HR departments made PowerPoint slides about it. 😄
Women from different backgrounds, colours, castes, religions, and languages worked there. During school holidays, my sister, brother, and I would happily join them for lunch. No VIP tables, no separate sections—just shared meals, endless stories, and a lot of laughter.
As children, we didn’t know we were participating in “inclusion initiatives.” We simply thought everyone was the same (except maybe when someone made better pickles than others).
Looking back, I miss those afternoons deeply. We never saw differences as barriers. The stories, jokes, and meals made us feel like one community. Somewhere along the way, many of those simple connections seem to have been replaced by labels and divisions.
Perhaps what we need isn’t another workshop on diversity. Maybe we just need more shared lunches. ❤️

My Eid was made extra special with my cousins, nieces, and nephews by my side. ❤️ Alhamdulillah!!

While many of our family members celebrated from different places, the love, laughter, and blessings reached us all. Distance may separate us, but family always keeps our hearts connected.

പീറ്റർബറോവിൽ നിന്ന് ഓട്ടവയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിദൂരം കാറിലാണെങ്കിൽ മൂന്ന് മണിക്കൂറാണ്. ബസിലാണെങ്കിലും, ട്രെയിനിലാണെങ്കിലും ഇനി വിമാനത്തിൽ പോയാലും കൂട്ടിക്കിഴിച്ച് വരുമ്പോൾ സമയക്കണക്ക് അത്രയൊക്കെ തന്നെ വരും. പതിമൂന്ന് വർഷമായി എഴുത്തിലും സ്ക്രീനിലും അടുത്ത് പരിചയമുള്ള സുഹൃത്തിനെ കാണാനാണ് യാത്ര. പ്രഫ. ചിന്നയ്യ ജംഗം കാൽടൺ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ ചരിത്രം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കീഴാള ചരിത്രരചനയെ കുറിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതി EPW 2016ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഒരു ലേഖനത്തെ പറ്റി ചർച്ച ചെയ്ത് തുടങ്ങി ലഭിച്ച സൗഹൃദം.

വന്നാൽ കാണാനാവുമോ എന്നന്വേഷിച്ചപ്പോൾ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്ത് കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു മറുകുറി. ഉച്ചക്ക് പന്ത്രണ്ട് മണിയോടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ താമസസ്ഥലം ഐമാപ്പിന്റെ സഹായത്തോടെ സുഹൈൽ കണ്ടെത്തി. കയ്യിലൊരു കയിലുമായി വാതിൽ തുറന്ന ചിന്നയ്യ നിറഞ്ഞ ചിരിയോടെ അടുക്കളയിലേക്കാണ് സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്തത്. റസീനയും സുഹൈലും ഞാനും നേരെ കിച്ചനിൽ എത്തി. പുറത്ത് പോയിരുന്ന ഭാര്യ പ്രഫ. മയൂഖ ഞങ്ങളുടെ സംസാരം മുറുകുന്നതിനിടയിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തി. ഇംഗ്ലീഷും, മലയാളവും, ഹിന്ദിയും, തെലുഗുവും, ബംഗാളിയും, ആ മുറിയിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ തലങ്ങും വിലങ്ങും കേട്ടു.

ഞങ്ങളൊരുമിച്ച് തീൻമേശമേൽ പാത്രങ്ങളും ഗ്ലാസുകളും നിരത്തി. സാ(ൽ)മൺ കടുകെണ്ണയിൽ പാകം ചെയ്ത മഞ്ഞനിറത്തിലുള്ള കറി വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് കൊൽക്കത്തയിൽ കഴിച്ച ഹിൽസയുടെ ഓർമകളിലേക്ക് കൈപിടിച്ച് കൊണ്ട്പോയി. ചിന്നയ്യ സ്വന്തം കൈ കൊണ്ട് പാകം ചെയ്ത ഇറച്ചി വരട്ടിയതിന്റെ രുചി ദിവസം രണ്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും നാവിൽ നിന്ന് വിട്ട് മാറുന്നില്ല. ഇതൊന്നും പോരാഞ്ഞ് ദാൽ പാലക്കും. അവസാന റൗണ്ട് മധുരവും ആയപ്പോഴേക്ക് ഞങ്ങൾ ഏതെങ്കിലും തരത്തിലുള്ള ബൗദ്ധിക വ്യായാമത്തിന് അൺഫിറ്റായിരുന്നു.

സംസാരത്തിനിടയിലെപ്പൊഴോ പ്രഫസർ JNU കാലത്തെ ഓർമകളിലെത്തുകയും സുഹൃത്ത് ഷാജഹാൻ മാടമ്പാട്ടിനെ കുറിച്ച് ചോദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഉടനെ അബുദാബിയിലുള്ള ഷാജഹാനെ ഫോണിൽ കിട്ടിയത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് വലിയ സന്തോഷമായി. പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ വഴിമുട്ടി നിന്ന അവരുടെ ചങ്ങാത്തം പുതുക്കാൻ ഇടനിലക്കാരൻ ആവാനായതിൽ എനിക്ക് എന്തെന്നില്ലാത്ത ചാരിതാർത്ഥ്യവും.

ഒരു മാസത്തിലേറെ നീണ്ട യാത്രക്കിടയിൽ ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു സമാഗമം നിനച്ചിരുന്നതേ അല്ല.
