In Worth Making 04 we’re talking with @sirkellypratt multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, songwriter, and musical shapeshifter.

Kelly has worked with an incredible range of artists, including Arcade Fire, Coldplay, LCD Soundsystem, The Decemberists, Passion Pit, The Antlers, Guster, M. Ward, Beirut, David Byrne, St Vincent, Father John Misty, Beck, Grails, and many more. His work spans bands, orchestras, film, television, touring, teaching, and songwriting.

Kelly is a rare example of someone who has built a sustaining career in music by staying open, adaptable, and deeply skilled. We’ll talk about how being a multi-instrumentalist, saying yes to a wide range of opportunities, and continually connecting into new musical communities has allowed him to collaborate across genres, expand his network, and keep making meaningful work in an industry where longevity can seem impossible.

Worth Making is our monthly live conversation series, recorded as a podcast, about the architecture of a creative life: the invisible scaffolding that helps artists and creative people stay true to their work while supporting themselves in a shifting economy.

Hosted by Karuna Scheinfeld, Allison Ross, and me, Michelle M Rose, these conversations go backstage into the real stuff: money, time, boundaries, collaboration, identity, support, and the tradeoffs that shape a creative life over years, not just seasons.

Join us in live virtual conversation for Worth Making with Kelly Pratt.

Introducing an art making machine designed and fabricated for @iskraprint Iskra Print Collective in Burlington, VT. The project is a total reinvention of the printing press developed in 2015 for the Museum of Arts and Design @madmuseum in NYC in 2015. This time the presses (2 of them for now) are small and mobile! In addition of being instruments of public participation, they are part of a community outreach program. The mobile presses travel in the state of Vermont and beyond to meet people where they are, providing access to a tool, a process and a practice they would not have access to otherwise, and creating meaningful experiences and connections. The project was funded by the Vermont Community Foundation @vtcommfoundation .

Different aesthetics. Different industries. Different ways of thinking.

Creative Directors on the Hence Roster bringing range, depth, and real leadership to the table.

Because great work doesn’t start with “who’s available?” It starts with “who’s right?”

Worth Making 02 is happening this Friday.

We’re so excited to welcome Raphael Bemporad, founding partner of BBMG, for a live conversation on building a values-driven creative business, navigating pivots, and staying inspired over the long arc.

We’ll also talk about the inflection point we’re living through right now and Raphael’s belief that creatives and designers have a rare opportunity to help write and design the future as AI reshapes how ideas move through the world.

Last week two of my esteemed design colleagues and I kicked off a monthly podcast series digging into what it takes to shape a successful creative career. Karuna Scheinfeld, former executive from brands such as Roots, Canada Goose, and Woolrich, and Allison Ross, creative director at top design firms like JDK and BBMG, joined me, former design leader at The North Face and Columbia Sportswear, to talk about our pathways from corporate to independent… the work, the life, the money, the identity, and everything in between.

In next episodes we’ll bring in some guests… creative leaders building unique careers, businesses, and lives that work for them. The journey goes on and we’re sharing it with you! Watch and listen to the full conversation on Substack and YouTube…link in bio.

Announcement:

My first album as Larker, "Romanticide" will be released on Friday, October 17th via Finicky Records. I'm so happy to finally share this with you. A lot of work went into to this thing. It's meant to be an epic break up album, but there's more to it if you look closely. It's mastered by the great Ryan Morey (Arcade Fire, Chromeo) and the beautiful album artwork was created by Allison Ross. Photo by Charlotte Rainville.

You can listen to Here and Myriad (album version) now on all platforms. Thanks to @takeaimmedia for spreading the word.

I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me up to this point and I hope to see you at a live show soon.
