A surprisingly hopeful panel on the 50th anniversary of Jonathan Ned Katz’s book Gay American History. John D’Emilio noted that 50 years ago there were no gay history books to ban. We have accomplished so much.

Pride and Juneteenth are not separate stories. They are the same story.

From the fight for emancipation to Stonewall and beyond, Black, Brown, queer, and trans communities have always been at the forefront of movements for justice. Freedom has never been freely given—it has always been fought for.

This Pride. This Juneteenth. We honor those who came before us, protect those here now, and keep building a future where everyone belongs.

Because the revolution has always been queer.
It has always been Black.
It has always been women.
It has always been us.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re spending time with @ted’s curation of Talks exploring Black identity, history, and culture. Sharing a few of our team’s personal favorites below, and we invite you to explore TED’s library of always-engaging Talks on TED.com.

1. “Can art amend history?” - Celebrated painter and sculptor @tituskapharstudio talks about his earliest memories of learning art history, visiting art museums, and how Black artists and subjects were egregiously omitted. His live workshop brings a fitting visual to his Talk, as Kaphar asks us not to erase the past, but to shift our view of it.

2. “The mission to safeguard Black history in the US” - The dynamic and engaging Julieanna L. Richardson, lawyer and founder/executive director of @TheHstryMakers, talks about the genesis of her fascinating project to document Black history, preserving archival collections of oral histories.

3. “How Black queer culture shaped history” - Historian and TED Fellow Channing Gerard Joseph @yeschanningyes shares a primer on how Black queer leaders throughout history have influenced monumental change and had an outsized impact on culture.

4. “The urgency of intersectionality” - civil rights advocate @kimberlecrenshaw begins her talk with a poignant reminder of how gender influences public awareness, press coverage, and policy.

Black and Queer folx have been the movers and doers of not just queer history but all history. This list of recognized figures is not exhaustive nor could it be.
Take the time ALL YEAR long to recognize the importance of Black Queer folx in history and in present day contexts. Prism motivates ourselves to include and move to center the stories, contributions, and experiences of Black Queer folx and ask our community to do the same and to hold us accountable to that vision.

We cannot engage in discussion of freedom and dismiss the necessity of reparations. I know many people are still very uncomfortable with this topic and I want folks to know that is because of the intentional indoctrination of the state and our culture of victim shaming. We have been indoctrinated to believe that if victims would like financial restitution then the harm they received must not be real or is somehow a manipulation to get one over. Those beliefs are built off anti-blackness and misogyny, which help maintain a dynamic and storytelling that people harmed by oppression are because of their inherent weakness and not because of the inherent cruelty of those in power. Do not cow to this cultural myth, because you are not aware of how to vision something more. Healing is expensive, victims of structural and cultural abuse have a right to restitution. My Venmo is Ashtin-Berry if you want to participate in giving a micro-reparation. Also, you should be supporting Black creators who regularly educate for free.

As someone who has been teaching on this platform about Juneteenth since 2015, I just want to remind everyone that this day is centered on the African Descendants of Slavery and more specifically those from the Galveston area of Texas. It is critical that we do not participate in the monolithization of Blackness or Black history. There are regionally specific celebrations of emancipation across the country and we should work to become familiar with those dates that connect directly to our personal history and the regions we now live in.

Reclaiming Black Queer History.

“How many other Black queer stories have been erased from the historical record? And what could those stories teach us about who we are?”

William Dorsey Swann—the first known self-identified drag queen and a formerly enslaved person—is a name many have never heard. Like so many Black queer pioneers, Swann’s legacy has been buried, overlooked, and left out of mainstream history.

In a powerful @TED Talk, queer culture historian and @TEDFellow Channing Gerard Joseph (@yeschanningyes) reclaims that legacy. He connects the origins of drag culture with African American emancipation in the 1880s, revealing how Swann’s defiance and dignity were acts of resistance.

This Juneteenth, Joseph reminds us that the fight for freedom has always included Black queer people and that telling their stories is essential to understanding the full truth of liberation.

After 27 years of friendship, @yeschanningyes and I still love to play tourist in the city we loved adventuring in as teens. This time we’re having deep conversations with the niblings on the history of slavery in New Orleans, while walking the oldest Black neighborhood in the US (*what used to be the oldest Black neighborhood before Katrina, gentrification, and AirBnB took it away from us). Still, we remember that Black labor and Black culture built New Orleans. 🖤

We’re both writing. I’m working on fantasies inspired by this city, and the bestie is recording the history of Black queers here. Walking by the river, it’s a call and response to our ancestors. A reminder for Southern Black writers to return again and again to the page and to the source—the places that keep the culture alive.

We are out here.
We are writing our own stories. We are myth-making.
