Happy Monday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Monday, October 19 through Wednesday, October 21.

III Points wrapped, and the city goes straight into Latin Billboard Awards week with no breather. The awards are fun to watch, and most of the names up there got there with streaming numbers a bot farm could have run up overnight. We care more about the local creatives here who are trying to turn real talent into real money. That’s why we’re hosting EQ tomorrow, where we’re breaking down sync licensing and how getting your music into film, TV, and ads actually pays. Comment EQ and we’ll send you the RSVP link.

We’ve also got a giveaway running for Pangea Sound at ZeyZey this Wednesday. Keep an eye on our stories this week for how to enter.

Got an event you want us to cover? Comment 🟦 and we’ll send you the submission form.

We love you Miami 🧡

Happy Tuesday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Tuesday, October 13.

@iiipoints doesn’t start this weekend. It starts today. The satellite parties are already running across the city, a full week of programming built around the festival, and you can catch all of it without setting foot in Mana Wynwood. III Points put out the official satellite set times, so the lineup is locked and the rooms are spread all over Miami. Festival wristband or not, the city is the venue this week.

Got an event you want us to cover? Comment 🟦 and we’ll send you the submission form.

We love you Miami 🧡

Happy Monday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Monday, September 21 through Wednesday, September 23.

EQ is back at Ampersand Studios this Tuesday, September 22, 6 to 10 p.m., and this is the one to clear your calendar for.

EQ is our monthly music industry summit, built to give Miami’s artists the access their talent already earned. No. 3 is all about EPKs, why they matter, what actually belongs in one, and then the room breaks down real EPKs together and gives honest feedback. Professional headshots from 3.2.Juan Flash Studios run the first 90 minutes, shot for you to use in your own kit, with designers in the room to help you bring your vision to life. The night closes with The Demo Room, where an artist plays an unreleased track for the full room and gets real notes on it. Drinks courtesy of Salsi and Topo Chico.

Space is limited and we’re keeping it that way, so lock your spot before we close the list. Comment EQ and we’ll send you the RSVP.

Got an event coming up? Want to get it in front of Miami’s most engaged audience? Drop a 🟦 and we’ll DM you our event submission form. Submit 72 hours before your event for consideration.

We love you Miami. See you Tuesday. 🧡

Happy Monday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Monday, September 14 through Wednesday, September 16.

A construction rig collapsed across Brickell Bay Drive this morning, landing on cars and setting one on fire. Four people were hospitalized with minor injuries, three workers and a woman who happened to be driving past, and all of them are expected to be okay. Rescuers had to cut some of them free. Nobody died, which given the scene comes down mostly to luck.

The machine was a piling rig, the kind that drills foundations before a tower goes up, and it came down over a road people use every day. It happened at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive, the site of Ken Griffin’s planned 54-story Citadel headquarters, one of the biggest developments in the city.

This is the second time in about five weeks that construction equipment has fallen in Brickell. In August a tower crane being assembled dropped onto the pool deck of an occupied apartment building. The failures are piling up in the middle of a record construction boom.

The city isn’t powerless here. Miami-Dade tried to pass stricter crane safety rules back in 2008 and got blocked on a technicality, so the tougher standards a morning like this calls for were argued and dropped almost twenty years ago. The cause of today’s collapse won’t be known for months, and the real question is whether Miami is putting up towers faster than it can do it safely, because the equipment is now landing on public streets where anyone driving past is in range.

If you want to do more than watch, there are two real moves. If you work a construction site and see it run unsafely, you can request an OSHA inspection at 1-800-321-6742, and the agency will keep your name confidential from your employer. And because the last real attempt to tighten crane rules died at the county level, the people to press are your city and county commissioners, whose job includes deciding whether Miami’s building boom comes with teeth on safety.

Today everyone walked away. The city might not be this lucky next time.

We love you Miami. Stay aware out there. 🧡

Happy Labor Day Miami.

We’re setting the usual tone aside today. Yesterday afternoon, an Amazon cargo plane arriving from San Juan overran a runway at Miami International Airport, crossed a road used by nearby warehouse and business workers, struck vehicles, and caught fire. Five people were killed and five more were injured, three of them critically. Some of those lost were people on the ground in the vehicles the plane hit, not only the crew.

Around 200 emergency responders worked the scene, including more than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units, who pulled people from vehicles and from the aircraft and fought a heavy fire for hours. Officials have not yet released the names of those who died, and out of respect for their families we won’t guess at them.

The National Transportation Safety Board has sent its top-level investigation team and its chair is briefing the public today, with the FAA sending inspectors as well. These reviews take time, and anyone telling you why this happened right now is guessing. We’d rather wait for the truth than repeat a rumor.

If you flew this weekend, you already felt the smaller ripple of it. Flights were grounded, more than 160 were canceled, and the airport is still working back to normal. That part is an inconvenience. What happened to those five families is not, and it’s worth holding the difference in mind today.

Miami is a city that shows up for its own. Keep the people who died, the ones still in the hospital, and the first responders who ran toward that fire in your thoughts today.

We love you Miami. Hold your people close. 🧡

Happy Monday Miami! Here's our curated list of events for Monday, August 31.

Rockstar showed off GTA 6 last week, a game that reportedly cost close to a billion dollars to build a version of Miami with better infrastructure than the one we pay rent in. The game is set in Leonida, a Florida stand-in, and its centerpiece is Vice City, which is Miami with the serial numbers filed off. They rendered a Vice City where the bridge actually gets finished, which is the most expensive piece of fiction in the whole game.

The pricing is its own small robbery, because the game runs 80 dollars, or 100 if you're the kind of sucker willing to pay extra for locations, missions and cars that were built alongside the base game and then walled off so they could sell them back to you a second time. You hand over a premium for pieces of a thing you already bought, and that still isn't the worst of it.

You don't actually own any of it. GTA 6 is digital only with no disc, so your 80 dollars buys a license that a company can switch off the moment the servers stop being profitable. You can move a whole family into a waterfront mansion in Vice City, and that will be the closest most people in this city ever get to owning property in Miami, because a home here now takes around 200,000 dollars a year in income while the typical Miami household earns about 62,000. The math says you'll rent until you die, the game says you can own a mansion for 80 bucks, and the fine print says you don't even own that.

Leading up to the extended look, an anonymous hacker called CyberLeek was leaking the game while screaming about corporate greed, and he's genuinely right about the whole lease-you-nothing scam, right up until he launched his own cryptocurrency off the stolen footage and let strangers pay him to vote on his next leak, which means he found the cure and started selling snake oil in the same afternoon.

The game comes out November 19. Let us know if you’re grabbing a copy on day 1 or if Rockstar waited so long, you’ve aged out of caring about video games.

We love you Miami. The one nobody can afford, digital or otherwise. 🧡

Happy Monday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Monday, August 24 through Wednesday, August 26.

A federal judge just ruled that FIU likely broke the Constitution, and the decision landed Sunday, one day before fall classes started Monday.

Back in March, about 20 students sat in the audience while FIU President Jeanette Nuñez, Florida’s former Lieutenant Governor, held an on-campus chat with Alex Rodriguez. Half an hour in, seven of them stood up, turned around, and revealed shirts that read “ICE OFF FIU,” then stood silently before walking out. Nobody yelled, nobody waved a sign, and nobody disrupted anything. They wore t-shirts and left.

They were protesting FIU becoming the first university in the country to let its own campus police enforce immigration law. The students spent months trying to get a meeting with Nuñez, and when she wouldn’t sit down with them, they made sure she saw them instead.

Three months later the school charged seven of them with misconduct for an “expressive activity” indoors and told them to record reflection videos or get a hold placed on their accounts blocking them from registering or receiving their diplomas. What makes that hard to defend is that FIU’s own event organizer wrote in an internal email that the protest did not disrupt anything and nobody complained, and the school moved to discipline them anyway.

On Sunday, Judge Jacqueline Becerra blocked the policy and barred FIU from further discipline, writing that for sixty years the standard has been clear that student speech cannot be punished unless it genuinely disrupts. Seven students in t-shirts who quietly walked out cleared that bar easily.

This is a preliminary ruling and FIU can still appeal, so the coalition is holding a town hall September 9. Peaceful protest on a public campus is protected, and a federal judge just reminded the largest university in Miami of that.

We love you Miami. 🧡

Happy Monday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Monday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 19.

Tomorrow is Election Day. The primary is Tuesday August 18. Polls are open 7am to 7pm. If you didn’t vote early, tomorrow is your last chance to have a say in who represents you. Governor, state legislature, congressional seats, school board, judges, local races, and Amendment 3 are all on the ballot. Know what you’re voting for and go handle it.

Tomorrow night is also EQ No. 2 at Ampersand Studios. If you’ve been asking when we’re bringing it back, this is it. EQ is our monthly DIY music industry summit for the people actually building Miami’s music scene. We’ve got a workshop by Somara Jacques, The Demo Room, and free headshots by @3.2.juanflashstudios.

Comment EQ and we’ll DM you the link but don’t wait because once it’s full, it’s full.

Got an event coming up? Want to get it in front of Miami’s most engaged audience? Drop a 🟦 and we’ll DM you our event submission form. Submit 72 hours before your event for consideration.

Happy Tuesday Miami! Here’s our curated list of events for Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12th.

Quick reminder that early voting runs through Saturday, August 16h. The hours shifted this week to 11am - 7pm which is actually better for people with jobs. You can vote at any location in the country so there’s no excuse. The primary is August 18 and if you skip it, you’re letting someone else make your choices for you (if you still believe in the democratic system.)

Also, EQ is back next Tuesday, August 18 at Ampersand Studios. If you’ve been asking when we’re doing another one, this is it. Capacity is limited and we’re not expanding it so if you want in, handle it now. Comment EQ and we’ll DM you the RSVP link.

Got an event coming up? Want to get it in front of Miami’s most engaged audience? Drop a 🟦 and we’ll DM you our event submission form. Submit 72 hours before your event for consideration.
