Day 1 of Kidney Week in Denver, and Yale Nephrology filled the poster hall before lunch. Six of our own were up this morning.

Dr. Abinet Aklilu brought late-breaking results from the KAT-AKI trial, a randomized study of personalized, medication-specific recommendations for hospitalized patients with early AKI, delivered by a nephrologist and pharmacist team. Recommendations were acted on far more often with the intervention.

Dr. Angela Victoria-Castro presented the design of PROMPT-CKD, a cluster-randomized pragmatic trial built into the electronic health record to get more patients with CKD onto guideline-directed therapy.

Dr. Laura Onuchic had two posters: the largest reported TSC2/PKD1 contiguous gene deletion syndrome, with an additional IFT140 deletion, and a case of anuric AKI that reversed suddenly after intubation, with a possible pH explanation.

Dr. Irene Chernova’s lab showed that the gamma subunit of the Na-K-ATPase controls ATP consumption in B cells, and that extracellular ATP acting through purinergic receptors keeps those B cells alive. Blocking that signal depleted kidney B cells and reduced proteinuria in lupus-prone mice.

Dr. Megan Baker used spatial transcriptomics on 35 kidney biopsies across AIN, acute tubular injury, and diabetic kidney disease to show that lymphoid aggregates, whatever the diagnosis, sit on one organization axis and are bounded by a CCL19-expressing stromal margin and a ring of dedifferentiated tubule.

And from our residency program @yaleinternalmedicine, Dr. Livia Frost presented a case of metachronous, histologically distinct renal cell carcinomas in a transplant candidate, a reminder that the elevated RCC risk in transplant recipients does not stop at the first tumor. Dr. Ursula Brewster was there to cheer her on.

Yaa Fosuah Abu-Dietz is a PGY-2 in the Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program’s ABIM Physician-Scientist Research Pathway.

Growing up, she was exposed to medicine from a very young age, accompanying her physician parents to work, where she formed relationships with patients.

“My interest was in the people, and as I grew, the things in their lives that were affecting them. Their illnesses stopped feeling abstract. I started thinking about what it would mean to one day understand those conditions well enough to actually treat them and make someone’s life better.”

Fast forward to today, she says one of her greatest privileges is getting to know patients and their families, sharing little moments of humor, and connecting with them.

Abu-Dietz’s research interest lies in gut microbiome mediated inflammation and IBD, and she plans to pursue a fellowship in GI.
