Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s 1927 film Metropolis is a German expressionist science fiction silent film based on von Harbou’s eponymous novel. Produced during the Weimar period of Germany, the film is set in a futuristic urban dystopia featuring gothic future cityscapes based on Lang’s “first sight of the skyscrapers in New York in October 1924” and landscapes informed by the Art Deco movement.

Outside of its references within pop culture, such as Queen’s 1984 music video for ‘Radio Ga Ga’ which actually uses imagery from the movie itself, and Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ music video paying homage to the film, the film has almost become a world of its own the 1996 DC Comics graphic novel Super- man’s Metropolis places the household name comic book character into the world of Metropolis. The concept and overarching theme of Original Magazine Vol. 3 is built upon the grounds of the iconic and referential imagery of Metropolis itself..

Ying Ou @ying_ou_ is a footwear designer and artist. After graduating with a degree in womenswear design, she began to focus on footwear design as she had a strong interest in it. She has also gained extensive experience working as a designer for well-known footwear and fashion brands. In 2022, Ying completed her MA in Footwear at London College of Fashion.

Ying enjoys exploring the human body, form, and human emotional needs. As a result a unique mix of reflective, sensual, elegant, sculptural and experimental personal aesthetics can be seen in her work.

Embracing 2026 with my sixth feature in Vogue ✨

There are moments that gracefully mark the passage of one’s journey. This is one of them. To be featured once is a dream, to return for a sixth time is something far more profound, something that humbles me beyond measure.

My heart is replete with gratitude. Eternally thankful not merely for the honour itself, but for the path, the perseverance, and the belief that made it possible. Yet somehow, it still feels like the very beginning.
