Happy Lunar New Year! According to the Chinese Zodiac, it is the Year of the Ox! Lunar New Year is celebrated over 15 days, marking the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars, and culminating in the Lantern Festival on the 15th day. The term Lunar New Year is more inclusive than Chinese New Year because many communities in Asia and in the Asian diaspora celebrate this holiday. Using the term Chinese New Year excludes these groups.

Lunar New Year is all about new beginnings with themes of fortune, happiness, and health. It is said that it began with a monster that would attack villagers. The monster was scared of the color red, bright lights, and loud noises - all of which play a major part of the holiday, so as to scare off such evil spirits.

As it's widely celebrated among the Asian diaspora globally. Some have their own names for it - Spring Festival in China, Losar in Tibet, and Tết in Vietnam. Some fun traditions include delicious family meals (like a prosperity salad) and decorating with an emphasis on the color red for good luck and happiness.

Red envelopes filled with money are given to anyone unmarried to ward off evil spirits and grand fireworks displays are put on to keep the monster away. Beautiful paper lanterns are hung and The Lion and Dragon Dance is performed to also ward off evil spirits.

There are many rules that go along with this time as well, like don't wash or cut your hair on the first day of the new year and pay back your debts before the new year starts.

Do you celebrate Lunar New Year? Let us know in the comments!

my entry for @yneejoiee's #yneejoiee500 dtiys!!! i rly had fun drawing this bc it makes me feel kind of happy and the original art itself is cute ( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ (og art on the 2nd slide)

also, with this dtiys, i was able to challenge myself to draw a full body art (which i always avoid bc i suck at anatomy)! i hope you like my version~
