![The Wim Hof breathwork method is inspired by the ancient Tibetan practice of Tummo (“inner fire meditation”), and translates to ‘fierce [woman]’.
But what happens when you fill up your body with oxygen (O2) by breathing inwards?
First of all, the normal percentage of red blood cells carrying O2 from your lungs to the rest of your body is around 99%. You are already maxed out - and breathing more doesn’t increase your O2 levels.
Breathing outwards however, does change the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in your body, as you let go from your lungs. A better question is therefore “what happens when you empty your body of large amounts of CO2?”
One thing which is affected is your urge to breathe. This urge is primarily triggered by CO2 levels rising in your blood - having low levels allows you to hold your breath longer.
Since CO2 works acidic, having less of it makes your blood alkaline (basisk) as its pH increases. This triggers physiological changes, such as your blood vessels tightening, making you feel lightheaded, and your limbs tingling.
CO2 is also involved in the process where red blood cells let go of O2 which they’ve picked up in the lungs, around in the body. The lack of CO2 therefore reduces the amount of O2 transferred to the parts of your body.
This is before you do the breath hold. Ironically, not breathing will in this stage stage release the O2 held by your red blood cells to your bodily parts. Since you are no longer breathing out CO2, its levels will rise quickly in your body, allowing the red blood cells to release the O2 held.
Ultimately, exposing your body to these changes in such a fast manner will release adrenaline, and with it a series of anti-inflammatory signalling molecules.
Wim Hof refers to it as a type of hormesis: the biological phenomenon where something is harmful in larger doses - but has beneficial effects when the quantity of the harmful substance is small.](https://s3.imginn.com/799958341_18628092520035321_8600476693214827425_n.jpg?t51.82787-15/799958341_18628092520035321_8600476693214827425_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_p828x828_sh2.08_tt6&_nc_cat=105&ig_cache_key=MzkzMTkwMTg1OTE2NTg2ODYzMTE4NjI4MDkyNTE0MDM1MzIx.3-ccb7-5&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=58cdad&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6IkNMSVBTLnhwaWRzLjEyMDYuc2RyLnZpZGVvX2RlZmF1bHRfY292ZXJfZnJhbWUuQzMifQ%3D%3D&_nc_ohc=S-o1t6OjE6wQ7kNvwF14BAy&_nc_oc=Ado8_XwunSQpN_PN6Q-jwlKT9TEb5nHN_qIR8dtyfFBGmEyacGDWENeI7sKktlWGLR9Kh_EM2FxqVFHEhvqI0khf&_nc_ad=z-m&_nc_cid=0&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=hp7YezPw1DDW6jzmLalGqA&_nc_ss=7a20f&oh=00_AQM1WVEu2z9U2KJk8h5nYsnJZ1MRSaTX9eOUsWly0cyqcw&oe=6AE240DB)
