HAPPY HANUKKAH! Enjoy those excerpts from Haendel's extraordinary oratorio telling the story of Judah Maccabee, the Jewish leader who defended his country from invasion by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
DRAMATIS PERSONAE
Judas Maccabaeus (tenor) – Daniel Portnoy Simon, his Brother (bass) – Hagai Berenson
Israelitish Women (soprano) – Liron Givoni, Monica Schwartz
Israelitish Man (mezzo-soprano) – Yonathan Suissa
Ensemble PHOENIX on early instruments: Rachel Ringelstein, Dafna Ravid (baroque violin), Yulia Lurye (baroque viola), Alma Mayer (cornetto and recorders), Guy Pardo (harpsichord)
Conductor, musical director, cello: Myrna Herzog
Recorded and filmed by Philipp Barsky at Studio Annette, the Felicja Blumental Music Center in Tel Aviv.
The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus by Georg Frideric Haendel was first performed on April 1st, 1747, at the Theatre Royal. During the composer's lifetime it was his second most popular oratatorio, having received 33 performances – continuing to receive regular performances until 1774. It was composed to celebrate the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion by the Duke of Cumberland and his army, one year before. The Old Testament appealed to the Protestant England, who upon Calvinistic influence saw itself as a "New Israel" chosen by God.
The story is taken from the First Book of Maccabees in the Apocrypha and the Antiquities of the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus. Israel had been conquered and was under the domain of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, King of Syria, who tried to impose Hellenistic culture upon the Jewish people.

Acis and Galatea By Handel. 2nd Tenor part in the soloists choir. Was absolute pleasure (of the plains). Wouldn’t have been the same without all of my amazing friends and partners (see my full “Hafira” on them on Facebook)
