Details 👇 Up there with my FAVOURITE legends in the whole of the Yorkshire Dales.

Why?

📚 Well I’ve pretty much told you the legend in the reel! Sometimes the beggar is a witch, sometimes an angel in disguise. What is consistent is the blummin’ lack of hospitality from all those Semmerdale folk. Except one, Malcolm, who was spared from certain doom by being a stand up guy!

👻 The church of Stalling Busk (featured in the reel) is also apparently haunted by the ghost of a grey lady and then, there are tales of so many ghosts haunting the grounds and houses around… maybe there’s some truth in that there legend…

(There’s not, I’ve been in that Lake, it’s pretty shallow 😏)

But a great tale nevertheless!

🏔️ The summit of the 2nd highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales has the remains of Bronze Age ring cairns, built for rituals.

We don’t know which rituals, but other examples in the Dales have held clues, with cremated remains and quartz being found.

🏔️ Not only has it incredible historical significance, it was also the place where a horse race was hosted in 1830 to celebrate the opening of a hunting tower. The party afterwards resulted in the tower being torn down by angry locals (who’d had a bit too much 🍻 😂)

🏔️ It’s one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the first attempt at this route was made in 1887 starting from Chapel le Dale. Now the 24 mile long challenge is walked by over a hundred thousand people each year.

🏔️ With so much history, dating back thousands of years, the significance of this famous mountain has led to many stories being told about it. It was believed to be the home of giants and evil fairies who wanted to lure unwary folk into the underworld

🏔️ speaking of underworld… Gaping Gill on the way up Ingleborough is the home of the tallest subterranean waterfall and is also allegedly haunted by a monk.

It was first explored in 1842, but it wasn’t until the end of the century that the main chamber was reached. In 1900 they put salt in the water of Fell Beck, 11 days later it reached Ingleborough cave. It wasn’t until 1983 that cavers finally made the connection between the two!

🏔️ it’s also got the ‘Boggarts Roaring Holes’ which are potholes, so called because if the sound the water makes when it rushes through.

🏔️ In 1947 another pothole on Ingleborough held a dark secret - a suspected spy had been walled up inside the entrance along with bottles of poison and his belongings - at the same time another body was found inside Gaping Gill - but it’s thought the two were unrelated.

This heavy rain has me reminiscing of the time I hiked Pen Y Ghent in the yorkshire dales last year and as you can tell by my immaturity at the trig point that I had the best time ever

Some people hide indoors when the heavy rain falls I on the other hand grab my waterproofs and search for those viewless summits

👇 I’ll bet you didn’t know the REAL reason Troller’s Gill is so called… because it’s not what you’ve heard… 🤔

Yes… everybody has heard of the story that the trolls who lurk in Trollers Gill are the real reason for its name…

But it’s not true! I KNOW 🤪

Well… it’s one theory. A theory I d been invested in for years! But I’m here to present another…

There’s a ballad told about Trollers Gill. It’s where we get our many versions of the story from, but it’s where you’ll find the REAL story.

About a ‘stroller’. A word used to describe a ‘wizard’. Like Gandalf. Except, don’t think of him, because nobody wants him to meet the same end as our stroller! 🧙‍♂️

The ballad tells us that the stroller entered the gill with a single aim. To conjure its alleged demon dog, the barghest. What happened that night is a mystery, but the following morning our stroller was found by a local shepherd and let’s just say he didn’t come off well after his meeting with the our glowing eyed beast. 🫣

The shepherd said that he’d been covered in bites from a creature, not from this world…

The origin of the name Trollers Gill wasn’t from the rock hurling trolls, but from our ‘Stroller’

As you can tell, I’ve done a LOT of reading now on these legends 🤓 All of the sources I’ve used are cited on the website - including ‘The Legend of the Troller’s Gill’ - Hone’s ‘Table Book’, published in 1828.

But the walk?

Well I’ve done this one many, many, MANY times. ….
