Case study: experiential dining 📝

Lately I’ve been thinking about the difference between eating a good meal and experiencing one.

My friend Kyra recently curated a foodie crawl for my cousin’s birthday. We took a progressive trip through some of Indy’s newer favorites and old-school institutions. Instead of settling in somewhere for three courses, we grazed our way through the city.

Beef tallow fries. Watermelon sorbet that was one of my favorite bites of the night. Tuna tostada and Sazerac-cured salmon. Catfish from the oldest? black bar in Indianapolis. Cocktails in between.

Random yet intentional. That was kind of the point.

We weren’t eating until we were full. We were tasting, talking, moving, comparing notes. Wait, try this. Okay, THIS might be my favorite. Then back in the van and on to the next.

I’ve realized I’ve been collecting food memories like that lately even outside of the crawl.

Sushi after IU’s opening game. An unexpectedly excellent avocado toast during a walk on the Monon. My mom’s home cooking — familiar, comforting, undefeated. And a VERY necessary stiff pour of Maker’s after a long day of press work 👀🥃

Maybe that’s what I’ve been enjoying most about food lately: the context.

Not every memorable bite needs a reservation, a tasting menu or even much fanfare. Sometimes it’s memorable because of where you were, who you were with and what happened just before.

Anyway, current research suggests progressive dining deserves further study 🥃🤔

WIP (Work In Progress). As of today I am T Minus 48 hours from taking a landscape photography course in Yosemite Valley. I’m excited and nervous. Extremely grateful to get into the mountains and explore nature. But hurriedly trying to finish up last minute projects and tasks…and a bit overwhelmed by life’s curveballs.

This week, I saw a post by @morgandebaun that reminded me to prioritize life’s joys TODAY! Relationships, fun, travel, family, health, discovery. The stuff that really matters. I think that’s what todays lil slide show reminds me of. That we are a work in progress, and all of the things (career, accomplishments) will continue to ebb and flow as we grow ❤️

Anywho, just sharing! Later 🫶🏾
