Usually, on my birthday, I post a photo of myself or some sort of behind-the-scenes picture. However, this year, I wanted to honor the last 12 months by sharing my experiences. It’s been challenging, but what I find amazing is our ability to continue to give and serve even when we have none.

But as I think about the past week, my heart, mind, and eyes return to people, the people who have fought and served alongside us. More than any accomplishment, I am grateful for the bonds forged in friendships and the souls we’ve touched that resonate deepest within me.

I think about what 25 years of life have been, the fears of inheriting traits from my father, and the weight of breaking familial molds. From a conflicted, timid boy to a finding my faith and submitting to a higher calling. Navigating through ventures, travels, and unprecedented opportunities.

What I love is that God never assigned me to create alone. It can be tempting to steer away from people out of anger and hurt, but what I love is that Even with Bezelel, with all the ability, skill, and talent he was given, God still sent someone for him to co-create with. I’m grateful that teaching manifested in my life by coming into this world with my brother. Our relationship, once strained by resentment and misunderstanding, has blossomed into a bond of trust, friendship, and shared character.

I think about this scene from Dead Poets Society by Tom Schulman, “But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote Whitman, ‘O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?’ Answer: That you are here - that life exists and identity; that the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

And I believe I can finally answer that for myself:
“In realms of light or shadows swerve,
With steadfast heart, I will preserve,
Through tempests wild, I shall observe,
In duty’s call, my soul shall serve.”
