Walter Murphy topped the U.S. singles chart on Oct. 9, 1976, with his disco-classical mashup, “A Fifth of Beethoven.” YourClassical host Aaron Cain joins The Current’s Jill Riley to talk about this surprise hit, and Aaron shares a bit of a surprise of his own: “Even though I'm a classical music host now, back in the day, the first time I heard Beethoven was because of this disco hit.”

We couldn't agree more, John! The first rehearsal when the orchestra finally gets to play alongside the singers is truly magical, nothing can really match the lush sound of a full orchestra 🪉🎻🪊🪈🎺🎵 Watch the rest of the interview at YourClassical MPR!

The BBC Proms — billed as the world’s greatest classical music festival — concluded its 2026 season with its hallmark Last Night of the Proms concert, and this year’s event included a medley tribute to the late Dolly Parton. You can listen to the Last Night of the Proms' tribute to Dolly Parton at the link in bio.

The seven-minute medley comprised the songs “9 to 5,” “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” and it was arranged by British composer and musician Fiona Brice. Accompanied throughout by the formidable BBC Symphony Orchestra led by Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo, singer and actress Sheridan Smith performed “9 to 5,” country duo Ward Thomas performed “Jolene,” and the Queen of British Soul, Beverley Knight, performed “I Will Always Love You.” BBC reporter Tara Mewawall described Knight’s performance as “magnificent and heart-wrenching.”

The Last Night of the Proms is the culmination of more than 80 classical music concerts that take place all summer long and are held primarily at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Find the full story and audio at the link in bio.

Cantus & Imani Winds: My Ancestors Speak is still available to stream through Sunday!

We loved sharing bits of our histories with audiences in this collaborative program of story and song. During the concert, Jake Christopher reminisced about growing up in Wisconsin and watching as his family danced a polka across the dancefloor at every wedding reception. He remembered wishing to join them so badly, until one day his aunt took pity on him and taught him the steps.

Listen in to the video to catch a snippet of Cantus and Imani Winds performing the "Tritsch-Tratsch Polka" by Johann Strauss II. Then purchase your tickets today to sit back and enjoy these two acclaimed chamber ensembles perform together before the streaming window ends!
