Every Monday we have a free program at @yourmovemkeinc called Mic Check Mondays where we guide kids and teens through the music making process, including writing lyrics and recording in the studio. Yesterday, we worked with one of our regular kids on his very first song and he snapped! Here, one of our youth workers @whereseye is helping him write lyrics. @414cjmackinfr is another youth worker who is instrumental in the studio helping kids write and record. I made the beat, and Dimas is seen on the keyboard constructing a bassline. Every Monday from 5-7pm at Your Move MKE Community Center. Free, all ages. #milwaukee #nonprofit #hiphop #studio #learn

#UniquelyMilwaukee - Your Move MKE is leading the initiative to paint raised crosswalks in Milwaukee’s Lincoln Village neighborhood. The youth-focused nonprofit partnered with Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works for the project. The department’s traffic calming efforts are part of the city’s Vision Zero plan to have no traffic deaths or serious injuries by 2037. This year, the city has slated 43 traffic safety projects across the city. “People just be reckless driving everywhere, all through the North Side, going through bike lanes, speeding through school zones... That’s what our city is really known for — reckless driving,” said Shalom High School senior Malik Hughes. Milwaukee Police have issued 1,703 speeding citations so far this year, according to data from the Traffic Safety Unit. A majority of these drivers were going 20-24 miles per hour over the speed limit. Your Move MKE co-founder and Executive Director Raque Aleman wants to assure the city’s young people that they are being heard and are able to make change. “We’re just trying to keep them active, and it’s really important to develop these principles and characteristics within them now: the value of investing in your community,” she said.
