T H I R T E E N /// San Diego bookstores worth losing an afternoon in. San Diego’s book scene runs from a used-book maze on Garnet Avenue to a tiny shop set inside a plant nursery. These are the ones we keep going back to, neighborhood by neighborhood. Where we’d send you first: 📚 @thebookcatapult, South Park: a book blog turned corner shop on Juniper Street, with sharp fiction picks and a reading room for kids. 🌺 @libelula_books_co, Barrio Logan: hand-built, floor-to-ceiling shelves of Spanish and English titles, zines, and art books a few blocks from Chicano Park. 🏛️ @verbatim.books, North Park: San Diego’s largest independent bookstore, stacked with used, rare, and local history finds on 30th Street. 🛋️ @barnesandnoble, Point Loma: the easy stop for new releases when you already know what you came for. 🎭 DG Wills Books, La Jolla: a Girard Avenue institution packed wall to wall, with a serious theater section and dollar books out in the driveway. 🏙️ @sdpubliclibrary, East Village: nine stories under that latticed dome, with a used bookstore on the ground floor that funds the library. 🪴 @throughthefoldbooks, Mission Hills: a mother-daughter shop set among the ferns and potting tables of Mission Hills Nursery. 🔮 @mystgalaxybooks, Point Loma: the city’s go-to for mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy, shelved by people who actually read it. 🍜 @youshouldreadbox, Liberty Public Market: a weekend pop-up turned permanent stall, right next to Slurp! inside the market. 📖 @libraryshopsd, Mission Hills: set inside the old Mission Hills library, where every book you buy goes back to San Diego’s public libraries. ⛵ @baybookscoronado, Coronado: an island staple for new and used books, stationery, magazines, and toys. ✊ @feministbookstore, Mission Hills: feminist lit, indie zines, and a monthly open mic from the team behind Jaded Ibis Press. 💸 Pennywise Books, Pacific Beach: buying, selling, and trading used books on Garnet Avenue since 1982. Save this for your next slow Saturday

There’s nothing quite like a good bookshop… especially when the people behind it are just as great as the books. 📚❤️ I recently visited YOU SHOULD READ in Liberty Station, and I had the chance to chat with Neil, one of the owners. If you love personal development, mystery, storytelling or just looking for your next great book, this is definitely a spot to check out. They have GREAT gift ideas as well!! Go say hi to Neil, browse the shelves, and support a wonderful local small business while you’re at it. And tell him Charlene sent you! 😉 #ResilientReaders #YouShouldRead #ShopLocal #SanDiegoBookstores #personaldevelopment

CALIBA Fall Fest officially kicks off tomorrow but attendees had the option of participating in a San Diego bookshop crawl today. Say less! We went to 8 shops and strolled past UCSD’s library on the coordinated crawl then I continued with an additional 5 shops on a self-guided crawl. Did I have a favorite?! Yes! I’ll tell you all about it when you ask me about it at the shop. Did I get a million ideas for merchandise displays, book arranging, and store flows, while also buying things I’d not likely find elsewhere? Also yes! What a fun day! Here’s where I went on the CALIBA crawl: * The UC San Diego Bookstore * Camino Books for the Road Ahead * Warwick’s * Bird Rock Bookshop * You Should Read * Roseville Books * Bay Books * Libelula Books & Co Then I went on my own bookshop crawl to: * Mysterious Galaxy * Through the Fold * Library Shop Mission Hills * Hey Books! * Book Catapult
