Yudel Francisco Cruz. A child. A hat. A gaze that has been waiting centuries to be seen.

Cruz does not paint portraits. He unearths them. The surface is worked and reworked until the figure emerges from the paint the way memory emerges from time: incomplete, luminous, and more true for it.

At 120 × 80 cm, this canvas holds a stillness that very few figurative works achieve. The kind that stops a room. The kind that stops a collector.

*El Cacique* by Yudel Francisco Cruz is a painting that understands its own weight.

Figure and horse fuse into a single form that rises against an open sky with the certainty of something that has always existed. Cruz does not construct this image. He excavates it. The amber surface, built and reworked in oil, carries the physical evidence of that process. Every decision visible. Nothing decorative.

This canvas asks something of the collector who acquires it. It is not a painting that recedes into a wall. It occupies a room, shifts the energy of a space, and demands to be reckoned with on its own terms. For a collection built on conviction rather than decoration, that is precisely the point.

Born and based in Havana, Cuba, @yudelfc ‘s work blends mythology, memory, and surreal figuration, often drawing inspiration from childhood stories, dreams, and Cuban cultural references. Through richly symbolic paintings, Cruz creates immersive worlds suspended between fantasy and emotion. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across Cuba, Europe, and the United States.

Yudel will be a visiting resident at @campocuttica during our studio visits and figure drawing afternoon at @campocuttica on May 23rd. Come discover his story, recent works, and enjoy an afternoon of art, conversations & more in Southampton on May 23rd.
