"But is it mean or is it a mirror?" That's the question Jaz Zepatos posed during my latest @officialbroadwayworld interview with the eight-member cast of @slamfrankmusical.

Before a performance at the Orpheum Theatre, we sat together onstage to discuss political extremism, antisemitism, identity politics, audience walkouts, and why uncomfortable theater might be exactly what we need.

The conversation was provocative, surprisingly personal, and often hilarious. From the dangers of ideological echo chambers to the distinction between depicting prejudice and endorsing it, the cast had plenty to say.

Swipe through for a few of my favorite moments from the interview, featuring @oliviab_24, @i8athumbtack, @jaz_zepatos, @austen_horne, @rockypaterra, @johnankerbow, @amelialouisebarr, and @yung___walker.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for SLAM FRANK at the Orpheum

IImagine the music and hip-hop energy of Hamilton meeting the provocative spirit of The Book of Mormon—then taking on Anne Frank’s story. That’s Slam Frank: funny, outrageous and often deeply uncomfortable.

At its heart, it’s a play within a play: a theater company tries to retell Anne’s story through today’s ideas about identity, representation and oppression. Anne becomes Anita, a Latina; Edith is a Black feminist; and other characters take on modern identity labels. The performers move between these roles and the present-day production, so the two worlds—and their ways of talking about politics—keep colliding.

That’s where the absurdity comes from, and why the show can feel so cringe-inducing: it puts the horror of the Holocaust beside today’s language and debates, then leaves you unsure who—or what—you’re meant to laugh at. It’s a strange, unsettling reflection of America now and of the ways we talk about history, identity and victimhood.

The music blends rap and hip-hop with big musical-theatre numbers and knowing references. “Her Story” was a standout. The cast is terrific, and the inventive set makes great use of the small stage.

A daring, entertaining and thought-provoking Off-Broadway show. Absolutely worth seeing. #slamfrank #musical #musicalblog #theatrereview #offbroadway

Don’t listen to these a&$h@&es - go see @slamfrankmusical immediately playing at The Orpheum Theater -
In a stunning development, Slam Frank, a satire about the dangers of moral certainty, has been accused of refusing to provide moral certainty.

The prosecution submits its evidence
The audience didn’t know when to laugh.

Precisely.

The tone couldn’t be trusted.

Precisely.

The show spent too long making its audience comfortable with discomfort before confronting them with something genuinely disturbing.

Your Honor, the defense rests.

To suggest satire has a “sell by date” because its originating controversy occurred in 2022 is to confuse a cultural symptom with the disease. The argument isn’t expired. It’s metastasized.

And dismissing its relationship to Hamilton as “wan” misses the delicious irony of using the language of theatrical revolution to interrogate the commodification of revolution itself.

Hamilton taught us that history has its eyes on you. Slam Frank dares to ask what happens when we’re too busy watching ourselves to notice history repeating.

You call it bloated. I call it accumulation.

You call it cynical. I call it diagnosis.

You call the audience restless rather than rapt, as though meaningful theatre must arrive gift wrapped in applause.

Perhaps the most revealing criticism is that the show leaves us unsure what to trust.

Good.

Art isn’t obligated to provide an answer key to its own examination.

Sometimes the most important thing a theatre can do is refuse to let its audience leave intellectually unscathed.

And sometimes the review accidentally proves the playwright’s point.

Critic’s pick indeed. #theatrereview #slamfrank #statlerandwaldorf #theatre #theatrelife

SLAM FRANK • Orpheum Theatre • Through November 30

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A theater company gives Anne Frank’s story a wildly inappropriate makeover, and the arguments in the attic get ridiculous. Terrific music, a hilarious cast, and fabulous design had me thinking about a return visit before the show was over.
