To close out National Physician Assistant Week, Katz College Physician Assistant Studies students and members of the Physician Assistant Student Association (PASA), joined by faculty member William Ameres, MS, PA-C, celebrated with more than 100 PAs and PA students at the @todayshow Plaza. They brought homemade signs and plenty of Katz College pride to celebrate the profession and raise awareness of the impact that PAs make in health care.

That's a wrap on the didactic year for the Katz School's M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2027!

Last month, students in the Katz School's PA program gathered with faculty and families to mark the milestone. Dr. Lorraine Cashin, PA-C, Assistant Dean and PA Program Director, offered remarks, followed by the cohort president and vice president and a celebration over brunch.
ㅤ
"Our students finish the didactic year having learned to think like clinicians. I have every confidence in the care they will bring to their patients and to the teams they join at our clinical sites," said Dr. Cashin.
ㅤ
The first year of the 86-credit program prepares students to deliver patient-centered care confidently and competently on interdisciplinary health care teams. Didactic lectures are complemented through hands-on training in state-of-the-art virtual cadaver and simulation laboratories, where students work through simulated patient-care experiences.
ㅤ
The clinical year puts that preparation to work. Each student rotates through eight five-week core disciplines and two five-week electives at clinical sites throughout the New York area, spanning family medicine, primary care, internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, women's health, pediatrics and behavioral health.

𝗔 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴

Maliha Chowdhury thought she knew what to expect when she began her clinical rotation in head and neck surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. But just before the rotation began, her family received devastating news: her mother had been diagnosed with a stage-four neuroendocrine tumor and would receive treatment at the same hospital.
ㅤ
She credits faculty support for encouraging her to move forward rather than step away. Working alongside surgeons, physician assistants and nurses, she assisted in complex operations involving thyroid cancer, laryngeal cancer and reconstructive surgeries — serving as a surgical first assistant in procedures lasting as long as eight hours.
ㅤ
But it wasn't only the technical complexity that shaped her education. Watching experienced clinicians communicate with frightened patients and anxious families became one of the most meaningful lessons of the rotation. When a newly diagnosed patient arrived frustrated and directed his anger at her preceptor, the PA calmly answered each question, recognizing that the patient's fear, not hostility, was driving the conversation. Afterward, he shared advice Chowdhury says she will carry throughout her career:

"To be a good provider, you must always remember we are seeing people on their worst days. When they see us, it's not because they want to. It's because they have to, and they need help. We are a sense of hope."
ㅤ
"It's not just about patient care anymore," she said. "It's about building a community during tough times. It takes a village to get through hardship. Community doesn't just come from the hospital, it comes from school, too. The Katz School really became my second home."

Future #KatzSchool PAs in action 🩺

In state-of-the-art virtual cadaver and simulation laboratories, Katz School M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies students gain hands-on experience with essential procedures including incision and drainage, NG tube placement and arterial blood gas analysis. They go on to complete thousands of hours of medical training, becoming versatile and collaborative clinicians providing evidence-based, patient-centered care for people of all ages.

Their commitment to excellence extends beyond clinical skill, rooted in service to the patients, families and communities they serve. As Dr. Lorraine Cashin, Assistant Dean and Program Director, puts it: "That's what this work is about providing care, offering hope and making a difference, one patient at a time."

PA Students Recognized for Academic, Clinical and Professional Excellence

At the M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies White Coat Ceremony, the Katz School PA Class of 2025 received their white coats and certificates, formally marking their transition from students to emerging healthcare professionals.
ㅤ
The faculty also presented awards honoring individual students whose work stood out for exceptional academic achievement, clinical excellence, ethical leadership, and service to peers and patients.

Trauma Surgeon on Hidden Toll of Living at Crossroads of Trauma & Inequity

At an intimate book talk hosted by the Katz School’s M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies program, Dr. Brian Williams—trauma surgeon, Air Force veteran and nationally recognized expert on gun violence and healthcare disparities—opened a rare window into the personal toll of navigating trauma, racism, and healing in America.
ㅤ
Author of the award-winning memoir 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜, Dr. Williams shared stories he seldom tells publicly: the loss of family members to gun violence, the emotional breaking point after treating injured officers during the 2016 Dallas shooting and the moment he realized the power of speaking up.
ㅤ
Moderated by Dr. Lorraine Cashin, assistant dean and program director of the M.S. in PA Studies, the conversation moved from clinical realities to policy, humanity and the responsibility that future clinicians carry. Dr. Williams reflected on treating patients who hurled racist slurs, closing a wound over a swastika tattoo with precision, and the inequities he witnessed firsthand while working in Congress on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022.

His closing message to the future Physician Assistants in the room was simple but urgent: show up, speak up, and understand your power. “If you’re not there,” he said, “you cannot make a difference.”

This past weekend, the @yukatzschool proudly joined the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in The Bronx, presented by Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Our team, The Katz Meow, exceeded its fundraising goal, raising $3,287 of our $2,500 target to support innovative research, provide resources to those affected by cancer, offer rides to treatment, and help save lives.

Students, faculty, and staff walked side-by-side with survivors, caregivers and community advocates—united by compassion, courage and a shared commitment to making a difference.
