It’s been 5 weeks since we started construction on our new LA Flagship! If destroying things counts as progress, we’ve made a lot.

We signed our first lease 2 years ago, and now we’re expanding. In the time since we’ve been here, Melrose Hill has become one of LA’s most concentrated pockets of art, design, food and fashion. It was always home coming for me because the art scene has always been my LA community, and my friends and galleries are here. And soon I’ll have a store with a large enough living room here to invite you all.

In the mean time I’m smashing but you can still visit us safely next door. @spinellikilcollin

Still pinching myself over this one. Talk about right place right time, and total luck. This is one of those records that can take a lifetime to track down — one of the most sought-after garage 45s ever. I’m super grateful to have had the chance to pick up an original copy of The Keggs — “To Find Out” / “Girl” on Orbit Records 😱

The Keggs were a bunch of 16 and 17-year-olds from Farmington Hills, Michigan, and their trip to a Detroit studio must rank as one of the all-time IDGAF sessions of the 60s. They couldn’t be bothered to tune their guitars and just went for it, which gave this record a singular, hypnotic and sometimes even a haunting vibe that many bands would intentionally aim to achieve a decade later. Throbbing drums, screaming vocals, amateur and primitive in the best possible way.

There’s a ton of lore around this record too. Supposedly only 100 copies were pressed, 25 went to local radio/promotions, and the story goes that most of the remaining copies were lost when the studio burned during the 1967 Detroit riots.

There’s also the story that the band was so hated locally they had to keep changing their name just to get people to come to their shows. Then there’s the infamous story that one of the band members was decapitated (!!) in a motorcycle accident on his way to practice just weeks after this was recorded. This has never actually been confirmed and is most likely untrue, but the mythology sure does fit the record perfectly.

Lots of people to thank for this one in helping me with this one. 🙏

Before music became something we carried everywhere, listening to it was often an experience in itself.

Listening rooms were designed around sound.

Part interior design, part ritual, they turned music into something slower, more intentional and more social.

In a world built around constant noise, the appeal feels more relevant than ever.
