Reflecting on @winyoshiphton performance at the Jago last month, where he gave his UK audience a first listen to his unreleased album, out this October.

The album’s themes, centered around new beginnings, felt especially fitting to sing here in London, marking the first of many tours to come to the UK.

Winyo is a once-in-a-generation artist and one of Kenya’s most cherished contemporary songwriters.

He is a wandering troubadour, a soulful storyteller, a dedicated custodian of the Benga musical tradition.

Last week at the Jago, Winyo shared his new album with his UK fans, marking a new beginning for him- stepping into the new whilst remaining true to where he comes from.

Benga translates as ‘beautiful thing’ in Luo language. It is a style of popular music in Kenya that developed in the 1950s and 1960s. It blends traditional Luo folk string patterns of the nyatiti with Congolese rumba and Cuban influences.

Big shoutout to @yvethi for doing such an amazing job hosting the night and welcoming Winyo to the stage.

Reflecting on Sunday night’s show, where @winyoshiphton performed his album for the very first time to his UK fans.

What a beautiful night it was, bringing together some very special guests: @djdubwise playing a selection of banging tunes for us, @vemaoriginal as support act bringing acoustic magic, @yvethi hosting the evening with all the charism, @naomi_ost joining Winyo on stage for spine-tingling harmonies and the wonderful band Kisagwa, Henry, Fiston Lusamba and Ed.

Thank you to everyone who came to listen to some heartwarming Benga music, perfect for a Sunday night.
This gig wrapped up Winyo’s first tour to the UK and we hope to have him back very soon.

There are evenings you enjoy, and then there are evenings that stay with you.

The EMY Africa London Soirée was the latter. Old friends found each other again, new connections were made, conversations lingered long after they ended, and every performance, every look and every moment added something to a night that belonged to all of us.
