1 week to go… Why this collaboration with Gegen?

At Boudica, we’ve always believed nightlife is more than a party it’s a space for self determination, community care and shared transformation.

This collaboration with Gegen comes from a desire to keep evolving what queer spaces can be.

Gegen is built around a powerful paradox:
in German, gegen means both against and around, a word that refuses to stay still.
They challenge what has become predictable or commodified in queer culture, helping us question how we gather and what freedom can look like.

Where Gegen provokes, Boudica holds.
Where they dissolve identity, we celebrate becoming.

Together, we open a space that holds and empowers while honouring complexity.

This is why the return of the playarea is so meaningful.
For us, it’s not a novelty, it’s a commitment.
A space where desire and intimacy can be explored with care, communication and consent;
where curiosity is welcome, and pleasure is understood as knowledge.

2025 has been a transformative year and you made it extraordinary.
Your presence, energy and trust are the reason we can continue building and questioning.

This night is our way of saying thank you
and of asking:
who might we become, together, when we let ourselves expand?
We build the fantasy.
You write the story.
See you on the floor.

The original watercolour sketches based on the characters from Another Country by James Baldwin commissioned by Omari for his bookclub celebrating the author during @mountstreetneighbourhood Arts Festival. The originals were displayed alongside the bookmarks and menus during the event at the Mayfair Library. Thanks again Omari and the whole amazing team for having me ❤️

Rewind to when the sun was shining and Omari & I had a reunion lunch. For the second Mount Street Neighbourhood Arts Festival we had secured the Mayfair Library as a venue. And I had remembered a conversation at Charleston Festival about how much we both loved James Baldwin’s Another Country. Fast forward to Tuesday evening, and several months of talking and planning later, and Impressions of James Baldwin’s Another Country, a book club led by Omari Douglas came to life, amid the books. (Baldwin himself according to the excellent new biography by Nicholas Boggs first went to the New York Public library in 1935. He put some of this experience into his first novel Go Tell It on the Mountain. Though his protagonist did not enter the library, and Baldwin did).
Beginning with a wonderful performance of a script, which Omari collaborated on with Cesca Echlin and that saw himself, Adam Silver, Gloria Obianyo, Patrick Vaill, Yolanda Kettle read extracts from the novel, with original music by Gloria. This was followed by a panel conversation, led by Taíno Mendez with Emma Dabiri and Joy Labinjo. Each chair held a bookmark with watercolour impressions of each character which Omari commissioned Rikard Wahl to make, with graphic design by Mina Azar and Zachary Mayne. The whole thing was expertly pulled together by Hannah Dolan and Samantha Walker, bell and all. Photos, mostly by Shaun James.
The whole thing went by in a glorious blur, and is now a magnificent memory that will forever make me feel a little warmer inside.
So many people to thank. Let’s start with Jess Christie who brought me on board to work on MSN, and without whom I wouldn’t have fallen for this book in the first place! Thank you to everyone who came and to everyone involved. To Baldwin’s estate for allowing us to bring his words to life. To Omari, for his passion, care, thoughtfulness, attention to detail and vision. Every step, pure joy.
If ever we needed moments like this, books like this, it’s now. I’m still high from it. If you haven’t read it… 🖤

Hiya! Oh this a very special one. For the second Mount Street Neighbourhood Arts Festival, @marsdoug is leading a book club that celebrates one of the best novels of all time: James Baldwin’s Another Country. It will include a performance of select scenes from the book - scripted by Omari and @cescaechlin - with performances by @theadamsilver @gloriaobianyo @patrickvaill @yolandakettle - which will be followed by a panel discussion led by @mendezauthor with @emmadabiri and @joylabinjo discussing the novel’s impact and relevance now. I was at a read through this morning and it gave me mega goosebumps. I think it's going to be absolutely wonderful. Plus, it’s being staged at the Mayfair Library and who doesn’t love libraries? 🤎❤️🩷
