NOOR ISSUE 01 - Muslim women in the creative industry

As a graduating graphic design student, you are not only being exposed to the real working life but also be faced with many doubts about yourself. One of my doubts is whether I would be a good fit as a Muslim Hijabi trying to burst into a white male dominated industry, lacking in diversity and representation.

Noor highlights this problem and raises how important and impactful it is to create a welcoming and inclusive working environment, especially with the upcoming generation filled with a range of identities and backgrounds.

This issue contains some remarkable women who currently work within the creative industry whilst also being proud of their Islamic identity. They show us that we, as Muslim Women, can flourish and thrive in this field. The interviews go into the experiences and struggles they have encountered in their careers due to being a Muslim and a person of colour.

With this publication, I want to reach out those in senior positions to carefully rethink, avoid biases and hire creatives based on who they’re really are, their love and passion for design. I also want to encourage those who are in a similar position to me to keep going, never give up and stay hungry, you will eventually find the perfect place, fitting just for you. ❤️

It’s been one week since BDF, how time truly flies when your having a blast!! Thank you BDF for always helping us and being a massive partner for our BCU community and graphics students. 🥳

To wrap up society activities, the Creative Exchange did a clay workshop hosted by @helenakatyjayne ❤️

We had some lovely outcomes using air dry clay, with some making their initials or creating a mini sculpture! This marks the end of the end of Creative Exchange for the academic year! Thank you for everyone who attended over the past few months ❤️

Here’s some outcomes from @fredfox.design ‘s analogue photography workshop last week! 📷🎞️

From portraits, landscape photography to funny slip ups, we had some amazing photos taken using SLR and DLR cameras. ☺️ The process of waiting for the photos to be developed and not knowing how it’ll turn out makes film photography fascinating and worth while! 😌

Thank you again to @fredfox.design for doing this workshop as well as borrowing your equipment and film! What a fun way to end society activities before breaking up for Easter 😊❤️

This week, we had @fredfox.design doing an Analogue Photography workshop! 📷

After a short and sweet presentation about different types of SLR, TLR cameras and film, we had a go at taking pictures in little groups outside of the Parkside Campus! 🎞️

Everyone had an amazing time, we hope that the photos come out brilliantly! Thank you so much to Fred for doing this workshop and letting us use his equipment 🤩🌟

This week, @kty.design hosted a type workshop! 🤗❤️

Using a grid and a couple of shapes, students created their own letters. Some followed the grid system and others decided to break the rules and not use the grids at all! It was great to see so many different outcomes 🤩🤩

This Wednesday, we have been playing around with paint, glitter and stamps to decorate our own baubles, ornaments and wrapping paper! 🎄❤️
