March 2014, eleven years ago, I started at @d_magazine. And about a month ago, I left to help start a new publication (here in Dallas) that I’ll tell you about later. It’s an honor to have worked with—no hyperbole—some of the most talented people in the business, people who take (and took) the elevator up to the 21st floor of St. Paul Place and try to produce something better than the day, week, month, year before. I had the privilege of working with online teams who were all driven to produce magazine-quality journalism online every day, hard as that is, always trying to find different stories and tell them in different ways and do more than we should have been able to. I got to work on giant projects in print and also figure out how to tell a story in 50 words. Very few people in journalism, local or otherwise, get to experience something like that for so long, alongside coworkers who push you and trust you and thoughtfully edit everything you write from Dr. Death to dozens of transportation and land use and local politics stories that have to be more interesting than the reader probably expects them to be. (Even fewer will get a tip in the form of your coworker being subpoenaed in the mayor’s divorce.) The magazine is on its 51st year, which is an unbelievable feat in an industry so volatile. Not every city has a magazine that devotes the resources, thought, knowledge, passion, and skepticism to help readers better understand where they live. You should subscribe if you don’t already. There are too many people to thank in this box, and hopefully I’ve done so personally over the past few weeks. So I’ll leave with a few things we can all agree on: @zaccrain forever, @d_magazine forever.

I met @zaccrain sometime in the early 2000s . We were all young journalists working in our big city . Zac was the music editor at the Dallas Observer . I was a staff photographer at the Dallas Morning News. We compared our love for writing and photographing @eisley ; the amazing family band out of Tyler, Texas . When I became a freelancer, we stayed in touch. I occasionally pitched story ideas to him . He always responded. Zac’s eye along with his way of words was unmatched. I felt, in someways, we spoke a similar language , a visual language. I highly recommend purchasing a copy of his photo book , A Pedestrian’s History of Dallas published by @deepvellum . A must for all Dallas history collections.
Zac, Sigh. Last weeks news of your untimely passing makes zero sense.
I made this crappy photograph at Herreras( thank you @gracevroom ), I think, maybe in 200ish. Zac is wearing my FredFlare censor bar shades , shot on my Polaroid. Dallas lost a historian. I lost an old friend. My heart goes out to Isaac and Nikki , all of his friends , @d_magazine coworkers and readers. #zaccrain #zaccrainformayor
