In the book, Butler questions the idea that the categories of male and female are determined exclusively by biology. Her theory of performativity proposes that gender is constituted through the repetition of behaviors, norms, and social practices. Butler's thought engages with authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida.
