Here's what's on the floor this week, October 5 to 11. Rumba starts Wednesday with Zach, Cha Cha is Thursday with Enxhi, Swing is Saturday with Zach and Foxtrot is Sunday with Howard — each Social Ballroom night keeps its dance for the whole month, so you can start any week. Vanda's Hustle is now on Thursdays, Salsa and Bachata are Friday, and West Coast Swing runs Monday and Saturday.

All levels, no partner needed for any of them. If you're coming every week, four classes a month is $95 — less than four drop-ins.

Three different things get called "group class" at Big Apple Ballroom, and knowing which is which makes the schedule a lot easier to read.

Social Ballroom changes dance every calendar month. Through August 31st it's Swing on Wednesdays at 7:30, Tango on Thursdays at 7:30, Waltz on Saturdays at 4:00, and Cha Cha on Sundays at 2:00. New cycle starts September 1st. West Coast Swing works differently — it runs as levels you move up through, Monday nights and Saturday afternoons. Bachata, Salsa and Hustle you can drop into whenever you like.

Every class builds on the one before it, and you can still start today. Social Ballroom and West Coast Swing Basics are built so that a new person can walk in on any week of the month and be completely fine. Not everyone starts on week one.

There's a real syllabus underneath all of it, five figures to a dance taught in order. But the steps are just the beginning. What you're actually learning in the room is how to talk to a partner without words, how to hear the music — counting first and then well past it — and what the character of a dance does once it gets into your own body.

And none of that is meant to stay in the classroom. Salon Series No. 5 on September 4th with Lindsay Jordan and her band, Disco Fever on the 17th, the Big Apple Soiree on October 17th, plus our socials and the showcases — that's where it turns into something you own rather than something you rented for an hour. Take the 7:30 class on the 17th and the party afterwards is on us.

Group classes are $30. No partner needed, no experience needed, all levels welcome. We're at 78 Fifth Avenue, 5th floor, on Union Square.

August starts Saturday. Here's the whole week in one place — screenshot it, you'll want it later.

Mondays are West Coast Swing all night: Sophie at 7 and 8, Sabrina on basics at 8, and the 9pm practice is free. Tuesdays, Bachata with Sabrina. Wednesdays, Social Ballroom Swing at 7:30 with Zach, then Hustle at 8:30 with Vanda. Thursdays, Tango with Enxhi. Fridays are Latin — Salsa at 7, Bachata at 8, both with Vanda. Saturday afternoons run West Coast Swing at 2 and 3, then Waltz at 4. Sundays, Cha Cha at 2.

Social Ballroom stays on one dance per day for the whole month, so August is Swing, Tango, Waltz and Cha Cha. September moves to Tango, Rumba, Foxtrot and Waltz.

Every class is drop-in. No partner, no experience, all times PM.

Summer rates hold through the end of September.

Showcases are kind of our thing at Big Apple, and I don’t say that lightly. These productions are a BFD.

Our next one is November 2nd at the Danny Kaye Playhouse. Rerun, “Don’t Touch That Dial” — a love note to classic TV. Cliffhangers, mismatched pairs, a full day of programming from morning through late-night sign-off. Maybe a few squiggly lines of scrambled signal in there too. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.

The creative process here goes well beyond putting a few steps together. The concept is what makes a piece mean something, and Clue was a good example of that — Edward Simon came in for a few days of conceptual work and it made the whole show sing. He’s back August 20th to shape this one, and JT Thomas follows the 25th through the 27th to launch it into production.

That’s when the show gets built. If you want a number in it, you want to be in the room for that.

Open to our students and to dancers anywhere in New York. DM us or call the studio at 646-598-7775 and we’ll set up a consultation. That seems like a pretty easy choice to make.

You just need to have the right blend of four feet - two per human. Doggos are limited to alternating between judgement of and emotional support for the hoomans.

Leia (our Frenchie) has insisted that we keep our summer rates going into the fall. What do you think? Drop a comment if you agree with Leia.
