Artists, what are we really avoiding when we procrastinate? What if the obstacle preventing us from being in our full creative power is not a lack of discipline, but a fear we have yet to confront?

In our Business of Acting class, Emmy-nominated television writer @zachdodes discussed his own experiences with procrastination and creative resistance, challenging the idea that productivity techniques alone can resolve writer’s block.

Rather than continually trying to push through resistance, Zach suggests examining what we are actually afraid of and allowing ourselves to confront the possibility of that fear becoming reality.

His insight extends beyond writing to acting and every artistic discipline. Instead of avoiding fully committing to the thing that we love doing, we confront whatever is blocking us head-on. In doing so, we create the possibility of responding to fear differently rather than continuing to be controlled by it.

A few years ago I logged an insane number of steps walking in circles around the Fox lot. It was about collective bargaining, but what I was lucky to get out if it personally was a special group of folks who will always be close to my heart. And when things got a little dark for us lately they banded together to shine a little light our way. Vivien Jastrzebski was the ringleader for this amazing group and together they delivered a gift we won’t soon forget, because the gift was more than just dinner, it was love. And we are feeling it tonight with stomachs full. Thanks to you all. 🩷
