Revisiting the film we made six years ago about our trip to Bonneville with @haasmotomuseum , @themightymotor and director @zackj_com . I Never got to hit the 230mph goal with the rain that year but it was an amazing experience for us all and watching Speedweek happening this week, I definitely have the itch to give it another go one day. Huge thanks @alpinestars @motulusa @pirellimotousa @bellhelmets

Fact of the day: 95% of the Mojave Desert lies within three miles of some kind of road. While out in the desert with @nittotire, we decided to take one of those roads, Burns Canyon, from Pioneertown up to Big Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains and hit the Sizzler for dinner. Fortunately, we’d packed for all kinds of weather because we got…all kinds of weather. The cheese toast was worth it, though.

Every winter, the Tule fog blankets California’s San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys from Red Bluff in the north all the way to Bakersfield, 400 miles to the south. Occasionally, this fog drifts west, slipping through San Francisco’s Golden Gate to the Pacific. Mostly, though, it settles into the Central Valley, shrouding the area in an eerie white for months on end, driving some locals to madness and depression.

One December, a few years back, we traveled to Visalia in the San Joaquin Valley to shoot an episode of Hagerty’s “Why I Drive” series with Brian Blain and his Ragtime Racers, who spend their days restoring pre-World War I race cars. These cars aren’t museum pieces: Brian and his crew race them at tracks around the country or, failing that, in the nut orchards that surround their workshop.

“These cars were built to race, meant to race, and that’s what we do with them,” says Brian.

In the run-up to our production, Brian kept apologizing for the fog. He only stopped apologizing midway through our first morning when I finally convinced him we were thrilled to have it. When Brian saw the final video — when he saw the ghostly figures sliding around in the dirt in a 1916 National, a 1912 Packard (the oldest Packard race car in existence), and a 1911 National that ran in the first Indy 500 — I think he finally understood why we, unlike those locals, welcomed the Tule fog.

The Colorado Plateau, wrote Wallace Stegner, “though impressive beyond description, awesome and colorful and bizarre, is scenically disturbing, a trouble to the mind. It works on the nerves, there is no repose in it, nothing that is soft.”

“Wouldn’t you like to be out in one of the wildest corners of the land, a place forsaken of everything but beauty and madness and death and God?” he asked. “Well, then, turn right and disappear here.” 👉

The best trips rarely (never?) go according to plan. But it’s precisely when everything goes sideways that the real memories — and the best stories — begin. Take a breakdown in the middle of nowhere: disaster for some, an adventure for others. It’s the difference between “we 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 solve this problem” versus “we 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘰 solve this problem.”

While filming on the Rubicon Trail, one of our support rigs snapped its rear driveline. To be clear, I’d advise against breaking your driveline in the middle of the Rubicon, but if it does happen, make sure you have Bob Sweeney + Co. along for that adventure. Not only can they MacGyver any broken vehicle, they thrive on the adversity. There they were on this trip, almost giddy, as they figured out a way to tow an injured Jeep over some of the roughest backcountry in North America.

A bit stressful? Yeah, I suppose (especially for Bob and Ron, the driver of that limping Jeep). But was it a blast, packed with moments we’ll never forget? Absolutely. After all, no ever sits around a campfire, telling stories about the time they sat on a beach and everything went perfectly.

Felt great to get back out to another Jeep Dirt Experience. Got to see some of my favorite people again, and meet new ones. Oh yeah, we drove over a bunch of rocks and stuff, too. Will post more as I allocate ;)
