Introducing my passion project turned Twilight Project, Climate Action Project, and Senior thesis all in one. Black Vermont Farming is born out of an appreciation and curiosity for Black people in the diaspora that work with land. With various frameworks in mind, my project examines the legacy of Black environmentalists, the history of Black land ownership in the United States, and the local Black farmers that continue to do the work here in Vermont. The zine details the ways in which, In Vermont in particular, Black Burundese, Haitian, Senegalese, Yoruban, New England, Southern, and so many more traditions influence the way we grow, eat, and tell stories about food. These Vermont farmers all utilitize food sovereignty, afroindigenous regenerative agriculture, and community oriented earth work in diverse ways to nourish deeper roots than before, restoring moisture, nutrients, connection, and meaning back to the land.
